One of my heelers got into it with a copperhead on Saturday.

No different than many other hobbies. When I raced motocross, crashing was a matter of when, not if. Luckily I got by with broken bones but no paralysis or death. Some hobbies have risks. We choose whether or not to accept those risks. I feel much safer handling snakes than I did riding dirt bikes.
