It is definitely a non-venomous watersnake

I am learning to better ID snakes. First things I noticed were narrow head and round pupils.

Are there any other indicators from these pictures?

Thin for length, especially the tail. The pattern screams diamond back.

FWIW, I do not ever look at pupils, and the only time head comes into play is with cottons and coppers, as those have a very distinctive look.

So venomous snakes will have consistent girth from head to tail?

Not necessarily and depends on genus, but the water snakes are most often confused with cottons and cottons are thick as a bowl of oatmeal.

Good lord. Don't listen to these dudes. That's a damn ground rattler. Take the longest object nearest you and bludgeon it till it's dead. Or you tear a rotator cuff.

Thanks for the ID.

I was taking garbage to the road very late after work. It was in the driveway.

I saw the Diamond back pattern and immediately looked down at its tail for a rattle, haha. I’ve never personally encountered diamondback water snake, so I learned something today. But I was pleased enough with the look of its head and tail to let it live. It seemed very docile.

When I came back from rolling the garbage can to the road, it was gone.

You will find that most snakes will exhibit that same behavior if you leave them an escape route, even the venomous ones. They really don't want anything to do with a human.

And for the downvoters scared of snakes, please feel free to. Bunch of punk bitches.

Looks like a water snake, could be a grey rat.

100% not venomous either way

First reply nailed it - you don’t see that everyday on a snake id thread.

If there was a side pic, you would see the vertical stripes on the jaw
