You are lucky in a way. Those critters usually live close to a friend. Quite often there will be two of them in the area. I have heard of several snakes that live in pairs.
fml there are more?

Yeah. I've always heard that for every one you see there are a hundred more you don't.
Sleep tight.

Being almost invisible I didn't spot one till I almost stepped on it, then I started looking around and they were all around me. At my feet. On the walls at eye level. Above me. I like to had a nervous goddamned breakdown walking out of the woods after that.

Most of the one's I've encountered in my life have been ALMOST stepping on them.
You often smell them well before you see them

That is not a sense I normally depend on when I'm looking for snakes.
I know what you're talking about because I've smelled it as well with cottonmouths, but I have never spotted one based on smell.

But I have smelled myself after I spotted one.

Next question, I'm assuming you picked a pic off the interwebs that looked similar to the one you just killed.

I have heard this but I'm very skeptical. I've been down wind of many cotton-mouths and never caught the odor.

I can smell cottonmouths and gators a long way off.

In my experience they don't stink till you piss them off.

I got trapped in a creek bottom with over a half dozen of those things around me with nothing but a bow. Was bow hunting and slipping down this dry creek bed and apparently they were having a goddamned orgy in it. I laughed b/c it happened to you, but frick a snake.

Dude that was one of those moments in nature where you find out who you really are.
I was alone. I had no gun. Was illegal back then to take a snake gun when bow hunting. And I had them both in front of me, and behind me. And I had no clue how deep they were because copperheads are damn near invisible in hardwood forests.
I moved REALLY, REALLY fricking slow getting out of there. Didn't kill any of them because it would have been a waste of time. I just needed to get the frick away.

Not exactly pissed off, but close. The musk is a defense mechanism, so it definitely gets stronger when they are approached.

Last time you've been within 100 yards of that spot?

You should have skinned him out. That one would have made a nice belt or guitar strap.
Also, evidently this board is full of a bunch of pansies.
