I fixed up a golf cart to drive on the beach at Grand Isle. After using it a while, I don't think it's the route that I want to go. The ride is pretty rough, it's not as fast as I would like and I think that I want more range.

I'm thinking a gas side by side is probably the way I want to go, but I don't really know much about them. I don't want anything new and it doesn't have to be the biggest or most powerful. Reliability is my primary concern.

It needs to be a crew cab, ability to haul 4 people is a must. I probably would want a 4x4, but a 2x4 would probably do the trick.

What should I be looking at? I'd like to be around 5-6k, but a quick search looks like that might be tough to do. I don't need or want tires or a lift. A midsized that is bone stock and several years old would probably be perfect.

What does the OB recommend?

I love my Polaris 900 crew but it’s like buying a small car I am not sure you will find one in working order in your price range.

I think at your range you would be better soupy my up a golf cart.

you can if you have a permit, tons of people use them on the island.

as for the OP look on facebook marketplace. I just found a ranger 500 in that budget I'm looking at. it isn't a 4 seater but will seat 3. a crew is gunna be hard to come by for 5-6k.

Lots of love for Polaris.

Side by sides and carts are allowed, no atvs.

I really hope the gas engines get outlawed. If I wanted to hear motors run all day I would go to the atv park or hang out by the highway.

I don't disagree with you, fwiw. I would even be for banning the gas golf carts.

But if they are going to allow it, i'm going to look into it. I would probably add a stealth exhaust, if they still make those.

But being that these cart registrations are a big source of income, and a lot of people already own side by sides; I doubt that they ban them anytime soon.

I think I heard there are around 1,000 permits...that's a nice chunk of change.

Does nobody like the other manufacturers?

Didn't Kawasaki Mule used to be pretty popular?

I'm in grand isle every weekend. I'm at bridgeside so there is no beach anymore for the kids. We have to go down the island to get on the beach. This is the 1st year we have to do it. I brought the gator down there. I would definitely get something 2nd hand and dont keep it long the salt air down there is hard on them. I have a club car golf cart it's on its 4th year and starting to rust. So to answer your question I wouldn't spend a lot of money on something if you plan on using it down there often

I was wondering how they held up to the salt

That was a concern of mine too, that's why I went with Club Car. I figured an aluminum frame means that there is a little less left to rust. The rear seat I added is aluminum and the front brush guard/rod holders I was planning on adding are aluminum too.

I'm pretty good about keeping my stuff up and wouldn't have any problem giving everything a good rinse once or twice a day when getting back from the beach.

I still don't know if that's enough though...

As said I wouldn’t rule out a mule. Also agree your price range will limit you. One downside to a Ranger, their paint SUCKS! Every one I work on is rusted pretty good. Heck the guys I hunt with that have dam near new ones are rusting already. This isn’t in salt environments either.

Polaris Ranger or Yammy Viking. The Viking has a better CVT system but Polaris is bigger and rides better. I have a Polaris 570 Crew EPS. The 570 has plenty of power for what I need it do do but I would get the 900 if I had to do it over. The 570 exhaust is super loud compared to the 900. Mine is a 2015 and haven't had any significant issues with it. BTW get EPS.

Stay away from the Honda Pioneer 1000.

Im familiar with the viking, ranger, rzr, and commander. Currently have the ranger 900 and highly recommend it. The commander would be my 2nd followed by the viking. From my experience

We have a 4 seater club car modified with a lift, softer springs and a one shock front and back cab system. Rides like a dream, We beefed up the motor and other electrical parts. cant recall the name of it maybe a rectifier??? Anyway I can run close to 30 mph on black top no problem. And I'm not sure why range is an issue for you? On a full set of batteries with these electrical mods my kids can drive all dang day around the neighborhood or rv park. Probably 15 plus miles with no issue. Have had it at deer lease all weekend with no way to charge it and it lasts all weekend fine. 2 miles to my stands one way. Quiet as a mouse and as long as kids don't joy ride a ton at deer camp it makes it till Sunday. I have only had it peter out on me one time but the kids rode it hard and I hunted on it hard that weekend.

I don't know the problems either. My charger may have crapped out.

Last trip I was limping in after about 4 or 5 miles. Batteries are only a couple years old. I have never checked voltage on them while charged, but they may have been low to begin with.

Going to get the batteries and charger checked out. If range is increased, I may keep it, but I'm leaning towards a sxs.

Single shock? What do you mean? My lift came with a single leaf spring inn the front, but it's stiff as hell. HD shocks in the rear are the same.

Driving on the side of LA1 is sketchy when there is no cart path. You want to go at a good speed to hurry and get off the hwy, but at the same time I can't because my stuff is jumping around inn the bed. An independent suspension would be welcome. Plus handling and power...

Just a thought for your price range you can buy a “jump seat” for most of these sxs and just put it facing the rear in the bed of the sxs. Probably not the safest thing if your cutting donuts in the sand but just for a ride on the beach it’s probably a lot of fun.

I have a can-am defender and I love it. I bought it specifically for the power though so it’s probably not what you need. I’ve ridden in a Kawasaki before with seating for 4 and it was really nice.

The new mule, with 2 seats, is a fantastic vehicle.
