Shrimp Bait

Just got my shrimp baiting license for this season. Heard a couple different things from the fellas down at the pier where I fish. There’s the chum you can buy, I’ve heard any fish based cat food, and also peanut butter cookies without sugar. What’s the easiest and best way to go? I got a couple of those bait buckets to leach out into the water. I shrimp on the river, if it matters.

You talking about castnetting? Never heard of a shrimp baiting license. I’ve always used pogie meal and flour balls.

River shrimp ?
Down here we catch a lot of Brown and White Shrimp in brackish to salt water using a variety of gear.
We have freshwater river shrimp also. My grandfather told me they would catch them in a wooden floating trap using cotton seed cake, kitchen scraps and fish heads.
It is illegal to place bait for shrimp in Louisiana. Maybe there is an exception for floating traps and river shrimp.
Most baiting down here was done using “ shrimp dust “. Either wetted and tossed where you were throwing your cast Net. Or put into sacks along a picket line. I never thought the effort worthy of either.
Most folks here in Terrebonne Lafourche don’t know what river shrimp are. They live in a very small world.

Never used bait in LA. Know the open season dates, find where the shrimp are running, and either trawl or throw a cast net.

Where are you? I have some powder that makes bait balls. I'm not gonna use it.

Yup. And yeah, to bait them in the fall you need a license here in SC.

Charleston, and to answer the questions above it is river shrimp and I usually just fish from the pier at Brittlebank Park.

I used to get big cans of cheap dogfood, punch holes in the can with an icepick, and throw it out (I would not throw the can out nowadays unless I could easilly retrieve it), and catch bait shrimp and fish with a cast net.

Did that years ago with a guy I worked with. We launched north of Charleston and ran to back side of islands. Basically 10 poles, throw bait ball in front of each, drink a beer and start throwing moving to each one. He used a combo of cottonseed cake, fish meal and maybe pogey oil. I think he used clay as a binder. It’s a lot of work, but fun.
