Someone mentioned this to me the other day. The LDWF warns against using it to prevent the spread of CWD.

LDWF Article on Deer Urine

quote:

Urine production and sale is not regulated by any state or federal agency. The production of these lures includes collecting urine through grates at captive cervid facilities. That allows mixing with saliva and feces, which typically have a higher CWD prion content than urine. The CWD prion is shed by infected animals through saliva, feces, urine, blood, antler velvet and decomposing carcasses.

quote:

Seven states have banned the use of deer urine lures, including Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Virginia.

quote:

CWD has not been discovered in Louisiana but has been in 25 states including Texas, Arkansas, and Mississippi.

There are lots of other articles you can google discussing the risks. Personally, I've never used it and would not have a problem if it was banned.

You need to vape it for it to work.

Add Tennessee to that list for 2019. Part of the new regulations.

Another thread on the topic but...

A) i am a firm believer that it works, and no one on the OB can convince me otherwise.

B) there is no logical reason for banning it. If the feds want to mandate that it be tested before being released to the public for sell, then go for it. Thats an easy process and most companies that sell the stuff already test for it and have steps in place to safeguard

It will be banned in Louisiana next year. If you read the LDWF proposed changes it is in there.

I would agree with this if there was an effective way to test it. However, according to the LDWF Veterinarian, there is no guaranteed or cost effective way of testing for CWD.

It just doesn't seem worth the risk.

The tinks website goes into a lot of detail about the risks and precautions they are already taking.

i'm also not a fan of completely shutting down multiple US companies, because of a prescribed 'risk' that is easily contradicted.

They can ban everything except ammunition and broadheads as far as I'm concerned. The woods would be a lot less crowded.

And the deer would have to move around more to feed. No more holding up in a thicket all day and then hitting feeders up at dark.

Code Blue certifies their products are not from CWD deer. Why not just regulate it to companies that have an acceptable collection and testing protocol?

I am a believer in the stuff.

It looks like the government agency experts say it can be spread through urine, but the manufacturer experts say it's virtually impossible.

I looked at the Code Blue testing standards

quote:

ATA’s program requirements for participating urine-producing facilities are:
-Must be in compliance with the APHIS Herd Certification Program.
-Facilities will no longer be able to import live deer or elk beginning December 31, 2016.
-All cervids transferred out of participating facilities will be tested for CWD upon death.
-Participating facilities must submit to an annual physical inspection by an accredited veterinarian.
-Participating facilities will undergo a 100% physical inspection every third year for the herd, and overall health of the herd.
-Participating facilities will maintain a double-fence if they’re within a 30-mile radius of a confirmed CWD case in any wild or captive cervid.

Isn't the only form of testing with brain tissue? Meaning the deer has to be dead?

If they undergo a 100% physical inspection for the herd, wouldn't that mean the herd would have to die?

And since they haven't been able to import live deer or elk since December 31, 2016, how do they restock after testing 100% of the herd?
