There’s the time old question of what is the best overall deer rifle caliber. But what would you consider the best thing to carry when the absolute farthest possible shot will probably be 80-100 yards, but the vast majority of shots will be 30-60 yards and through the woods.
12 gauge? Slow heavy bullet that won’t deflect much? Or just blast with the same .308 that is used for everything else?

You mostly answered your own question there.

That said, a 30-30 with irons isn’t a bad choice.

I don’t really want to fire any round through brush.

This has been proven to be a myth.
It really comes down to compact and easy to acquire sight picture in low light and small windows.
I spend 90 percent of my time hunting at my current lease with 30-30 lever gun with a 2-7 power variable scope. It has detachable scope mounts and I occasionally remove the scope and shoot with the iron sights.
A 18-20 barrel 308 bolt action with detachable mounts 2-7 power scope and open sights would be a brush gun that would take you out to 300 yards if need be.

Correct. If anything helps this at all, its speed.

The main thing is a compact rifle with fast, easy to aquire sights. A short rifle with a red dot is really hard to beat. Next would be a low power scope (2x) and then express sights, then regular Buckhorn irons. Peep sights also work great and are usable for 100+ yards. The only problem with a red dot is that it really sucks for any kind of 100 yard+ shooting, at least for me.

My personal getup is a marlin 336 with a 2-7 scope. It'd have a red dot if it wasn't my back-up pipeline rifle if I drop or lend my other ones. I had a peep on it for a while, but my eyes aren't good enough for that in low light.

If we start talking about actual heavy work like griz country or Africa, big rifles (375 and up) with express sights become the leaders.

There was an article in Guns & Ammo magazine several years ago where the author tested many calibers shooting through a brush pile. The 338 win mag with 250 grain pointed soft points performed better than all others.

Yeah that’s what I have. I’m looking for a beater 336 that I won’t feel guilty about butchering to make a cut down 16in bbl and install a red dot on it.
I’m to emotionally connected to my current ones to do it to them.

I have 1 currently and 1 on order. Blaser R8 in 9.3x62 is what I currently have with a Zeiss victory V8 1-8. I also have a Christensen Mesa in .450 Bushmaster on order. It's a 20" barrel that I will likely cut back to 16" and rethread to put my can on it. That one will get a Zeiss V6 1-6 on it.

And that was probably a product of testing inconsistencies more than anything. IIrc, 7mag did well also, and the big slow slugs did the worst.

Bottom line is that if the bullet hits something on the way there, the result is uncontrollable and will most likely suck regardless of the caliber being used if its a shoulder fired weapon

It was my grail gun and I finally got it. I have a 6.5 barrel for it too with a Zeiss v8 1.8-14.

If ammo availability wasn't a major concern, I would only ever hunt with my .35 Remington. In fact, when I have ammo for it, that's all I hunt with.
