I have the opportunity to hunt on some private land in the Southeast zone this year. I looked up the dates, limits, etc. I’ll continue to read the regulations, but what are some things I might miss?

A few things off the top of my head I’m questioning are hunter orange rules, and transporting a deer back to Louisiana.

Not the best part of the state for sure, but have never hunted that area.

500 sq in of unbroken orange

MS Regs

I don't know of any transport issues - not a CWD zone or anything.

For what it will cost you in gas and out of state license fees I personally wouldn’t even hunt it. That’s probably the least populated area of the state for deer.

And the ones that are there are NORMALLY very unremarkable.

Ehhh I think the people manage it pretty well, plus I’ve been swamp hunting the past few years (and I’m a shitty hunter) so I seldomly see deer anyways.

Also, the WMA that I normally hunt on close to my house decided to cut gun season down to 15 days this year.

That area and SW AL are some of the best areas in the country to hunt.

perhaps but they are both very bad places to kill, especially anything of note.

You cant quarter the deer and bring it back. You cant bring any spinal material in to Louisiana. Be ready to catch hell for being a coonass hunting in ms.

I've hunted a few places around SE MS. Deer are very easily spooked (lots of pressure), and don't tend to be big. Just get quiet, don't move at all, and plan on long hours in the stand.

The isolunar apps don't seem to correlate at all to movement in the places that I've hunted around there

Deer are smaller than anywhere else in Mississippi but it sounds like it will be a huge increase in deer sighting from a swamp where your rarely see deer to a modestly managed place located anywhere in Mississippi.

Don't waste your time and money unless you just value a quiet time in the woods, seriously.

ETA: if you must go to MS head to one of the WMA's around Natchez, you will see more and bigger deer, it is not just management it is primarily a food source difference.

Poor soil and pine forest are just not prime deer producing habitat.

I grew up hunting just south of Hattiesburg and I agree with what everyone else is saying, if you can choose anywhere else in the state to hunt, do it. The deer here are skittish and undersized. Their head is on a swivel from the moment they leave the thickest shite they can find to lay up in. Majority of deer movement is at night. 98.37% of all hunters here either bait, run dogs, or both. If you’re not one of them there’s a good chance you won’t even see a deer, much less kill one. There are a few decent bucks shot every year, almost always behind a doe in late January. It’s home to me but I jump on any invite I get to Natchez or Meridian.

They have a Big Buck Drive. What else do you need to know?
LINK

Put a $28 Walmarks camera out over a pile of rice bran and see if it’s worth your time.
You’ll need an orange vest. Debone the meat and saw off the horns before returning home.

I am from Natchez and still own a bit of land there but live in the Poplarville area, it aint even close.

I have hunted in the SE zone a few times as guest at camps due to the later closing date but drive back the the farm if I wish to actually hunt.

It took me a while to get used to seeing folks drive around with a little basket racked 8 point that weighed 145 lbs on display as some sort of trophy in the SE zone.

This is accurate. I used to hunt a place just south of Hattiesburg and the indiscriminate dog running and poaching made hunting impossible and the deer were absolutely skittish.

I made one two day trip to a 2k acre lease this January (I think). Saw deer every time time I was in the stand, so did the other guy I was with. Deer were fairly active in both the early morning and dusk hours. No huge deer, but the meat was good. My experience was fantastic, but anecdotal.

The lease is cheap and the other guys are good people, so I’m considering joining. I don’t need monsters as long as I can fill my freezer with meat of any kind. SE MS seemed to fit that bill.

We are just southwest of Waynesboro in Clara, MS

pretty decent deer and good population of them...

naturally the further west you go towards Louisiana the better the genetics...

we had a good season take of racked deer last year and this year looks even more promising on cameras.

we feed year round and also provide rack supplements throughout the property

A friend of mine hunts in Poplarville on some friends land that manage it well and has decent results there.

Well out of 16 replies, atleast 1 was positive.

As long as I see a few deer I’ll enjoy myself. The camp is nice and riding a sxs to the stand will beat trudging through the swamp 9 times outa ten.

Can anyone confirm that poplarville is a dry town?
