School me on Air Rifles

The damn squirrels are eating my house bit by bit. I'm thinking about getting a PCP .177 air rifle. I know nothing about them as last air rifle I had was a Daisy Red Rider bb gun.
I live in a sub-division on 2.5 acres as are most house with many much larger. Looking for something accurate, quiet and preferably $300.00 or less.

Get a Benjamin .22. I had a pigeon problem and got a .177 it lacked the punch needed so I bought a .22.
I added a Hammers 3-9x40AO Spring Air Gun Rifle Scope LINK
I used the Air Venturi Intermount and the Vortex Optics Hunter Riflescope Rings low for mounting scope to gun LINK LINK

I’ve been shooting PCP air rifles for 30 yrs. Started out with a DayState Harrier X in .22 and recently bought a FX Impact Mk2. CF tanks are a must as pumping to 3,000 psi sucks !
Refilling in the field after 35 shots to top off at 3000 psi
Friend of mines setup from the early 90’s
Gonna be hard to find a PCP setup priced at $300. It can be done for $500. Buy a .22 and don’t waste your time and money on a .177. Fit it with a moderator and be done. I’ll gladly help you or any other OB’ers with answers or insight to this addictive hobby.

If you don’t mind waiting a lifetime for the worthless ATF, a suppressor on a .22 will work fine. Quiet.

I bought a .22 suppressor from Silencer Central on Sept 2021. Still waiting.

They are pretty easy to catch in a live trap. Relocate them.

I don’t think you can get a good setup for $300. You are looking at about $1000 for the gun, scope, rings, moderator (silencer), and high pressure air compressor if you go with nothing fancy.
Might I suggest an Air Venturi Avenger in .25 caliber? Don’t bother with .22 or .177 - waste of time and money. A .25 cal will perform much better on squirrels and will reliably kill them, unlike .22 or .177.
High powered moderated PCP .25 cal will perform nearly identical to a 22LR subsonic suppressed on squirrels and your ears.

I am laughing my butt off. Dad wanted me to get a .22 rifle but instead I got a .22 cal Sheridan back in the mid 60's. I knew that I could only use the rifle if he was there but he thought it was just a slightly better than a BB gun.
Shot a rabbit in the arse the first evening and brought it home. Next day a fox squirrel in a front yard oak for which I caught the wrath of mom for killing one of HER squirrels. She would throw a few whole pecans behind the kitchen to watch HER squirrels play while she washed dishes.

Buy a .22 caliber air rifle to kill squirrels. The smaller .177 caliber takes a well placed shot to really kill squirrels. You can get in for under $300 if you buy the standard fare piston crack barrel rifles that Academy has in stock.
PCP air rifles take more capital to get into. You need the rifle, the refillable tank, a backup scuba tank, a good scope, and this will put you in the $1000 range or more depending on what you want.
I had a squirrel problem once. They ate into my attic due to over population in my neighborhood. My .22 air rifle (Benjamin Marauder), outdoor blind and some peanuts proved to be all I needed to thin the herd.
Good luck.

I have avoided PCP rifles for a couple reasons, and have beef very happy with the three rifles I have bought in the last few years. My favorite is my Sig Sauer piston one. Super accurate and very powerful. For the close range house sparrows I shoot, I actually prefer my Umarex Fusion 2. It's super cheap and CO2, which is really easy to deal with. I have been amazed at how accurate this cheap rifle can be.
If/when you buy, get multiple high rated pellets, as all three of mine like different ones. The difference in accuracy can be surprised. Fortunately, there are reviews for most popular models that can get you close on pellets.

Air Arms TX200 MkIII
Mine's .22 cal, walnut stock, bluing is perfect. It's a tack driving heirloom with a sweet trigger. 650fps range and very quiet.

Never had a problem with 177 caliber. Of course, this was with a pump pellet gun . Very, very accurate with just sights on the rifle.
