SAT Phone recommendations

My son (21) has taken up hiking. I told him I think it is a good idea to get a Sat Phone just in case of emergencies or even in case of bad weather, getting lost etc.
His concern is cost......any suggestions on a reliable Sat Phone that can get the job done but not break the bank?

A sat phone will be much more expensive than a satellite messenger. I use a ZOLEO for this and I really like it. You can pull weather to it, text folks, and scramble the jets if you need government rescue, some others that are similar l to consider would be a garmin inreach or bivy stick. Look at the activation costs and monthly plans, the initial cost won’t be a factor after you have been paying for plans for a year.

If he doesn’t actually need messaging and just needs something for absolute emergency, get an ACR PLB. No monthly fee. Pretty much indestructible and you just have to swap out battery every like 5 years. Is essentially equivalent of an EPIRB for a boat.
If he sets it off they’ll send in a rescue crew. It’s a satellite locator beacon

Sat phones are quite expensive. I'd recommend a sat messenger type (Garmin inreach). It allows you to message (can even link to your phone), but not make calls.
I've hiked/travelled in some very remote places around the world and it's great piece of mind.

The in reach mini or the zoleo messenger are better suited for what you’re looking for.
Most of the backcountry guys are having better luck with the zoleo.
That’s the route I went with no regrets

The satellite phones I have dealt with were not very effective at all. They may be better now, but we had some at work when Katrina hit New Orleans.
I think the latest iPhone actually has some level of satellite messaging for use in emergencies. I believe it will send an SOS to emergency authorities and notify your loved ones that you have sent the message.

I have a Inmarsat phone and you’re looking about $800/yr. The deal when I got mine was that you were going to pay approx $1500 total for phone/initial minutes. I paid a few extra bucks to be able to roll minutes over and it costs around $800/yr to buy a couple hundred more and roll the rest over.
I used it during hurricane recovery and I’ve used it when traveling in remote areas. Works well but it’s expensive and I think starlink will make it less useful for things like a hurricane since you can simply use WiFi calling with generator and starlink.

It does, but uses the globalstar network. Iridium (Garmin devices, etc) covers every corner of the globe.

Makes sense for select applications. Hiking isn't one of them.

What’s going to happen to a 21 year old on a hiking trip where he needs to be in communication?

Garmin in reach is perfect OP. You can send messages also which is much nicer than a PLB so you can send something like “on the way 90 mins late” or whatever so people aren’t worried. They are like $10/ month give or take

Same things that could happen to someone of any age...

Garmin inreach is the right answer. I have one, it is great. I also bring an ACR PLB when roughing it. Makes my wife feel a lot better.
