Nothing brings out 25 different opinions of rifles and calibers on the OB like a question regarding one caliber in a choice of 2 rifles.

I have an unfired 30.06 Axis I would part with. Took it as part of a trade and do not need it or want the extra caliber. No scope but has rails.

Didn't even notice. Hope I didn't contradict my old lie with a new lie.

Got the wal-Mart special last year. Axis .270 for 199.00. It’s been a great rifle so far. Put a Vortex on it. The mag is not really smooth and the bolt felt a little grainy befor it got broken in good.

I bought my son a ruger American in 6.5 and while the stock leaves a bit to be desired it’s a good shooter and I added a master piece arms break to the end which makes recoil very tame. Eventually I want to upgrade it to a magpul hunter stock. I will say that the blueing isn’t the best and you better oil it quick if it gets damp. It does a great job for a sub $500 rifle and will get you hunting on the cheap

Have you held both of them? I’d get my hands of them first before I bought one. I was deciding between these two and the Mossberg Patriot in .270. The Mossberg felt better in my hands and that’s what I went with and it has been an excellent choice for myself.

This^. Both the Savage Axis and Ruger Predator (as well as the Mossberg for that matter) are good guns. I think of all of them as "entry" level guns. While they're accurate gunshot function well, they're typically not as refined as "upper" level guns. Entry level guns are surprisingly accurate these days. In fact, most are prob more accurate than was a upper level gun not that many years ago.

Since they all function pretty similarly, go to a store, put your hands on the guns you're considering and handle them. How does it point for you? What does the balance feel like? Do the bolt, safety and trigger feel better on one gun or the other? Personally, I don't like the feel of the Ruger stock as the handgrip feels really thin.

Although someone said the T/C Compass feels "clunky" to them, I'll add that I bought a Compass in 7-08 for a future "grandkids" deer rifle. Although I've got <$200 in it, It's scary accurate.

308 Win is a fine deer hunting round. The scopes you mentioned are good choices. I like "lower" powered scopes like the ones you're considering as opposed to >12X mag scopes.
