We're planning to make a few runs offshore out of Grand Isle this summer when the weather looks right and was curious what everyone's using for line size/hook size, etc for both mangrove and red snapper.

Is a 4000 series spinning reel with 30lb braid heavy enough for mangroves? We have bigger spinning gear if not. What about leader and hook type/size? Planned to also keep a heavier spinning rod/reel at the ready incase a cobia shows up.

Red snapper we're all set for rod/reels, but how about line? 80lb braid enough? How about leader material? Hook size?

Depends on the reels drag rating, either way you will just palm the spool to drag the mango clear of the platform. 30lb wont cut it. Go 65min or 80lb. You dont need much capacity.

This varies based on water clarity and fishing pressure. Small circles. 20-50lb flouro.

80lb is more than enough.

I use a knocker rig most of the time. 8-12oz egg on mainline, swivel, and a 3-4ft section of 80lb mono or flouro power snelled to hook. Thinking of just crimping 100lb this year. I pretty much exclusively fish reds from wrecks or reefs. Platforms have crazy pressure lately.

Some like "small" hooks, but I like them big.I use the Lazer Sharp L2004 black circles from academy in I think 11/0+

I’d be more likely to throw a 4000 spinner at a cobia then a 5+ lb mangrove fyi. Cobia don’t really fight or make long runs, where as a mangrove will try its best to take you into the structure.

I always prefer to start small and move up in gear depending on water clarity and bite. Bigger gear is easier if they’ll bite, but mangrove are notorious for being gear shy.

Longer leaders, smaller hooks. The truth is anything from 20lb Brad to 80, 3 ft leader to 10 ft, 20lb leader to 100lb, and weight can be 2 oz to 12 oz. It all depends on the conditions, structure, etc.

ETA: 4000-8000 spinners depending on the conditions are generally good. 4000 a little light and 8000 a little heavy but either could be needed again depending on the bite.

It's because there's less platforms to fish. You can thank BSSE's Idle Iron policy.

CCA is unable to build enough artificial reefs to keep up with the pace of platform removal. It's devastating to the ecosystem in the GOM.

yep my go to mangrove rig is a cabalas combo 7000 with blue 50# braid, FG knot to 20-40 fluoro depending on the bite. they arent biting, go smaller. Small J hooks buried in the bait.

For snapper i have been going smaller and smaller, my custon rig i build a few years ago its an Avet G2 JX 6.0 . Put it on a rod i built, MHX Offshore 4'6" 40-60 lb. I put colored 80# braid, 8-12 oz lead then swivel and 80# mono on different sized circle hooks depending on the bite.

I was going to Acid wrap it but decided against it. I love the short jigging rigs because the bend in them is awesome when your pulling them up.

Whatever you decide on for hooks/leaders/weight bring plenty. Between the sharks and break offs you will go through a lot.

I love Avet’s. I personally fish left handed from growing up with spinning gear.

So I buy the Avet’s silver LX, HXW in left hand 2 each, and buy Avet black LX, HXW right hand 2 each, 2 left handed MXL, 1 left handed SX, and some spinfisher 4500-5500

I use these for trolling, left hand silver HXW on port gunnel, right hand black LX on port rocket launcher, right hand black HXW on starboard gunnel, left hand silver LX on starboard rocket launcher.

HXW 80lb hollow core with 80lb floro roughly 50-100’.
LX 50lb hollow core with 40lb floro 50-100’
MXL 40lb braid 30lb topshot tied on
SX 40lb braid 30-20lb top shot tied on
4500 all have 30lb braid and my topshot will change based on teeth
5500 80lb braid straight like then for jigging live lining or tossing plugs

avet is a great choice
a less expensive option is tekota 5000 or 6000
5’ 6” MH stand up rod
80# braid
30# flouro leader
circle hook
chunk of pogie or a live croaker

When I was younger in early 2000 Avet was the tits affordable but higher end and American made with a lifetime guarantee my uncle absolutely loved them… so when I was finally able to buy my first real gear it was all Avet.

I also really liked the penn Baja special that was my other choice when I was shopping really almost got them bc they were newly updated better tried and true star drag senators but with all stainless guts and exterior And came in left handed… gotta have left handed or I won’t buy

Ima have to check out the tekota

My favorite rig for snapper is a Shimano Calcutta 500 with 40-50 power braid and 30 pound flouracarbon leader on a st croix 7 foot tarpon rod. I mean they are almost all 25 pounds or less.

Can’t use if damn AJs are around or if having to muscle in from rigs but perfect for snapper off wrecks and this type of rig will not wear you out like a damn big rig.

Plus I can promise you the heavier weight and line you use the less bites you will get. I have proven it a 100 times.

We usually catch the fish over 20 pounds on a drift line with a long flourcarbon leader once feeding starts.
