Looking to gift a very good friend that is an avid hunt a new rifle to enjoy at the new camp he just bought into. $1200-$1500 range.

What type of hunting? Open with long shots or mostly 100yds and in?

does that include the price of glass?

Helluva friend you are, sir.

At this time, I would lean towards either a .308 or 30-06 bolt action with a decent scope. Both of these calibers are excellent for white tail deer in North America.

You cannot go wrong with a 270, other than locating ammo the last 6 months.

At that distance I’d go with a 7mm-08. Can get reduced recoil and good damage, without much overkill from the other calibers suggested...

Something that would be all-purpose.

$1200-$1500 is what I'm thinking, but I'm not a broke dick or a cheap arse, so I'm flexible.

Thank you very much, I'm more interested in Manufacturers and brands. If you can point me in the right direction.

If he's an avid hunter then this probably won't be his first rifle. Do you know what he already has? May be better to fill a hole or compliment his existing options rather than duplicate something he has.

Also, do you know whether he has a preference for classic wood/blued looks or more modern synthetics?

I am partial to browning rifles.

Been hunting with a a-bolt in 270 for the last 25 years. Still one of the smoothest actions and quietest safeties I have ever used. Also like the detachable box magazine.

He's had it a while: Remington 700 ADL Centerfire Rifle Package, 7mm Rem. Mag.

Tikka rifle in your choice of caliber.

I'm partial to .308 and 6.5cm.

Look at a Leupold VX3 or VX5 scope. I have a VX5 HD 3-15x44. It may be the best north american hunting scope. It isn't that bad expensive and the power range covers pretty much everything.

I’d go with the Model 70 as well.

If he is an avid hunter and just bought a new camp, chances are you will not be able to make him happy with what you pick.

Why not gift him the money in an envelope and tell him to buy what he wants?

Took 12 posts before Tikka or 7mm-08 was recommended. OB is slipping.

Agree. OP should just spend the entire budget on a scope for the guy and let him put it on a gun of his choice. If it was me that would be my preference.
