Tigeronthehill, thank you. My grandaughter is 13 and as long as she ask to go, I'll take her. We're making the youth hunt in the morning.

With the Barn's bullet do do get pass through?

Solid copper. Yes you'll get complete pass through. Most deer are DRT.

I've shot a deer head on in the chest with them. I know that's not a good shot but we had a dog and I wanted to see what that bullet would do. Complete penetration. The bullet was in the skin of the hind quarter. That's damn near 48in of penetration. It ran 100yds but we recovered it. Broad side shots right behind the shoulder , they are falling right there or dead in under 30yds out to 300yds. I don't use any other bullet in a 270 because it flat works.

Ol Boy
I caught 16 this morning before 10. Someone has to do it. I'll be taking the granddaughter to the woods in the morning for the Arkansas youth hunt.

She has shoot three deer with the Federal Fusion load. The doe dropped. The two bucks ran off - 30 to 50 yards. I believe there's a lot of energy exiting the deer with this load. When I reloaded, I used Nosler Balistic Tips. Seldom did I have a deer take a step. The load seemed to be just about optimum with devastating energy transfer and an exit wound for tracking.

Nosler accubonds and partitions would be a hammer on deer. I’ve also done Sierra Game Kings. Those were killers as well.

You can buy factory ammo with nosler BT for .270,

But I still don’t see anything wrong with what you mentioned on the fusions, unless you had no blood trail.

I wish you luck on the youth hunt tomorrow. I have a lot of fond memories from my son hunting w/ me near Village, AR. I see you're in Magnolia so you'll. know where that is. He's grown now but doesn't hunt. Although he did sit w/ me in a stand a few weeks ago and watched me kill a doe. It was nice to have him w/ me again. I don't have youth to take hunting tomorrow, but I might go hog hunting tomorrow PM. Enjoy all the time you get to share w/ your granddaughter.

ETA: Did you previously teach at SAU? If so, some of my acquaintances may've crossed paths w/ you.

I taught at SAU for 14 years. We lived on Greene St and our house burnt four years ago. We moved to Lake Erling with my retirement. And, yes, I've had a few hunts in the Village area but mostly Falcon Bottoms. Now we hunt on properties around the lake.

I get sub moa 3 shot groups with 46.0 gr imr 4064 and a hornady 140gr btsp. Once the thin barrel on the browning A bolt heats up the groups open a little.

I don’t see the problem here. Put two holes in the deer and the deer ran 30-50 yards. The point of shooting at a deer is to kill it and find it. Passing a bullet completely through the vitals results in this 100% of the time assuming you are a half assed woodsman. I don’t understand the reason for searching for a bullet thinking there’s a magic one out there that 100% of the deer shot with don’t take a step.

To the original question though, as several have said the fusions in 130 or 150 are fantastic bullets in a 270

Report on the Arkansas Youth Hunt.

My grandaughter took a big bodied 6 point this afternoon. Thanks to all the contributions to my initial question about Win 270 options. Y'all have provided multiple positive ideas.

Happy New Year!

I would have thought Jack O’Conner died years before the SC version of H4831 came along but I could be wrong.

H4831 a great powder though in either original or SC

Congrats to you and your granddaughter! Deer hunting's usually pretty difficult around here this time of the year.

It probably was. But discounting differences in lots, H4831 and H4831SC should perform identically. It is supposed to be the same powder. The short cut just meters better.
