I got my lower unit back and having trouble getting it to go in smoothly. The drive shaft is catching. I tried turning it clockwise but it isn’t budging. Is it ok to turn it with pliars with a towel or rubber in between to protect the shaft?

Have you looked on You Tube? Good chance something will be there to help you out.

Either do that or turn the flywheel. Can probably do the latter by hand

you may be able to get someone to bump the key switch for you to get it to line up

Take the spark plugs out and it's much easier to turn the flywheel

Sure it's not the shift tube? You can hold the lower up and turn the tube a little with needle nose and it will pop on, if that is the case.

No it’s not. The gear linkage is a 1/4” from the hole. I’ll just bump the flywheel till it slides in.

Been there many times. The splines are pretty close together, if mine does not line up I will turn the shaft about 1/8 an inch and try sliding it in again. If you didn't remove it in neutral, you can turn the prop a little while inserting the shaft. I also put a little grease or antiseize on the splines before I reinstall.

No, I'm being serious. I worked at a dealership and our techs will remove the kill switch and just bump the key switch on then right back off. It basically turning the flywheel with out having to turn by hand which can be hard.

also helps going up sideways and then slowly twisting the lower unit straight until the spines line up. They did this on the yamahas and bumped the key on mercs

put it in gear and just turn the prop as you wiggle it, job done

sometimes its the water tube is a little bent and not slipping in, check it and rub grease on the rubber grommet and the tube end so it slips in easy, also grease the splines on the shaft

Got it on. I’ll never try and do it solo again. Girlfriends dad helped turn the fly wheel and the shaft went in smoothly. Tightened the nuts, put it in gear and the prop turned. Thanks for the help everyone.
