“You really had to piss him off to make him mad. I mean, he was the type of person that would take and take and take. And then, finally, you push him off the cliff. He’s gonna—he’s gonna express his feelings, I guess you would say,” Gingras says, noting that Vowell never said anything more about the argument. “He kind of blew it over his shoulder and let it go. David’s not the type of guy to carry really anything on his shoulders … Yes, we’ve had arguments over ducks, but you know, this—the [shooting] wasn’t over a duck.”

I don’t understand how you are looking at the boat gun, concerned about the dude getting the gun then see him reach for it and he has time to get it.
Maybe I misread it

Anti-depressant meds can do strange things to people. So can coming off them suddenly. We really don't know what happened, but I had a good friend who was hit by severe depression. She was treated for it and, for a year, seemed almost back to normal. Then it returned. Her doctor put her back on the meds. She only fired a gun once in life, into her temple.

I get the sense those comments are more in hindsight and in the moment it would have happened fast. Up to that point he thought the old man’s gun had accidentally gone off.

It also seemed like it was an extra boat gun, which ive never heard of really when duck hunting and everyone has a gun already. But that’s a different story. But it’s very likely in the moment, as pointed out, it was assumed to be an accident and the boat gun was forgotten about and potentially initially out of sight. He loaded everyone up and had his mind on getting to the ramp, then the gun was seen but it was too late.

Boat gun is so that when a cripple lands way the hell over there and is still trying to scoot, one of the guys can just jump in the boat and go, and not having to worry about transferring gun or shells from blind to boat. Sometimes you gotta get to gettin real quick to retrieve a crip.

Did you miss the part where they autopsy of Vowell showed no signs of blunt force trauma or anything resembling any fatal blows?
You'd have to point that out to me. All I saw in the article was specific reference to the autopsy showing no evidence of dementia.
