Recommend a knife in the $30 range for my 17 yo nephew. He wants a knife. Never had one (and will most likely lose it). Lock blade 3-4 inches

Ontario rat i or ii depending on how big he wants it

Oughta be able to get a regular ol buck lockback for that.
Cheap enough to not suck too bad if he loses it but would last forever if he takes care of it.

Kershaw Leek is currently $32 on Amazon.
Extremely popular knife and great for an edc. Usually around $40-$45.

Outdoor Edge swingblade. Has a good blade on 1 side and a gut/skinning blade on the other

Used Buck Prince.
Smaller but like a razor. Very well made.

Kershaw makes good quality knives in this price range...many of them made in USA.

I have a Rat 2, and have bought several for other family members. You can’t beat it. It came extremely sharp from the factory.

Absolutely love mine that I bought after seeing it recommended on this board a few years back.

Morakniv has some good options. I have purchased several and keep them in my truck, tackle box, shop, etc.
Bought all of mine on Amazon.

I'm going to echo the Ontario Rat 2. I tend to like knives a little bigger, so the Rat 1 actually is more my style, but I started with the Rat 2 and it is an extremely good value at your budget. The basic Rats are in Aus-8, but they do offer a D2 version (for a little more) of both so make sure you specify.
Still should be able to get it in D2 for about $40.

I'm going to preach a little bit on this topic - Amazon itself isn't the problem. I don't see any evidence of their complicity in the knife counterfeiting scam, but their inventory system allows it. You can order from Amazon or a verified seller and if they have it - you're golden. If they don't and they pull from somewhere else, there is no telling where you'll get the knife. That is not as big a deal at this level - the $30 to $50 range, but still a concern.
For something like this - knives are heavily counterfeited - particularly Spyderco and Benchmade in the $100+ range - I recommend everyone building a relationship with one of the top tier online knife retailers - BladeHQ, Knife Center, Knife Depot or even Columbia, Louisiana's own Knifeworks and buy your knives from there. You're not going to spend more than a fraction of a percent over Amazon at the end of the day and have peace of mind.
And I'm not knocking Amazon, necessarily, just this one area that I have moved away from buying from them and I, personally, use Knifeworks. YMMV

Leatherman Crater. I've carried one everyday for the last 3 or 4 years and I've had no complaints.
On Amazon for $24.95

I am notorious for losing knives so I never get anything over $30. I bought this about a month ago and have liked carrying it so far. It has good reviews.

I was coming to recommend the leek on sale at Amazon. Great knife, easy to sharpen, the profile works great for day to day use and I think it would be easier to stab someone with a knife like the leek than other options that have broader tips, if it came down do it...
