I'm planning to buy my first supressor next year. I have absolutely zero knowledge of what's involved, other than I can't just get one like the Europeans can

I'm looking for some recommended reading or some guidance from yall on where I need to start and what it's going to cost me.

If you are around Baton Rouge go to Spillway Sportsman. Ricky will take care of you. They do the passport photo and have a digital fingerprint machine. He fills out all the paperwork for you. Your fingerprints are saved so when you buy your second one (and you will) all he has to do is upload from the file and you put in your PIN number and payment.

Thanks yall, I didn't realize there were so many options. I figured it'd be a major pain in the arse. I really would rather use a local shop than an online place.

I'm well aware that this is a gateway thing and i will want more of them. Do I have to pay $250 every time I buy a supressor, or a SBR or anything like that? Or is it a one time expense?

You can buy locally but still have the benefit of using the Silencer Shop kiosk. My first suppressor in 3017 was paper print and application done at my local dealer. I bought a can he had in stock (SilencerCo Spectre II). Waiting time 3 1/2 months. I bought a second suppressor in November 2019 using the same dealer and the Silencer Shop kiosk (digital prints) w/ paper application. Waiting time 8 months. I bought my third suppressor September 2022 from Silencer Sho. The dealer didn't have in stock the suppressor I wanted, I'll pick up the suppressor at the local dealer. This time I used the eForm 4. Since the prints were in the Silencer Shop kiosk, the only additional thing I had to do was take a picture. That was pretty easy using the Silencer Shop app. I just got the eForm application "certified" a few days ago. The dealer had not returned my two phone calls to him so I instead I went to the store to carry out the certification w/ the dealer and ATF. The current waiting time has a median of 8 months. I'm not sure when my "wait" started, at the beginning of the completed application or certification of the application. The ATF's wait time goal is 90 days for eForm 4. The dealer has become so frustrated w/ the applications and dealing w/ the ATF that he says he's not going to continue as a dealer once he's sold his current suppressors. The current median wait time for a paper application is 19 months. One can't help but wonder if the ATF's eForm "90 day wait time" is in earnest or whether they'd rather discourage suppressor sales by making the wait time so long.

I'd suggest finding a local dealer who has the Silencer Shop kiosk. If they have what you want in stock, buy it. But if they don't, you can still buy it online from whoever you want to and pick it up at your local dealer.

ETA: Do any of y'all have any idea when my "wait time" started??

Absolutely go to a brick and mortar with a kiosk. I’m awaiting my first can from silencer central, and while the process was simple, there are added steps for them to be able to mail it directly to you. One of those steps is waiting for Louisiana state police to approve paperwork. That’s where I am in the process. My stamp was approved on November 22 and I’m still waiting on local law enforcement to do their part. If I would have gone through a local shop, I could have picked my suppressor up over two weeks ago.

You should have received an “application status: submitted” email from the atf. Attached in that email is a file with your suppressor serial # and control #. Your wait time started the day you received that email. My approval took 249 days.

FYI , there is a stickied thread on the nfa subreddit for form 4 e-files. Users post submission dates and approval dates. Good tool to keep track of how far you are from your approval date.

My only advice is start the process ASAP. I put it off for years because I didn't have the patience to wait. I started my first one on April 8th for a Silencerco Switchback. There are people getting approved today who applied in early April so I'm due any day now. I plan on starting one for a 556 can the day I go in for pick up.

I don't have an email from AFT saying “application status: submitted” in my suppressor folder so I'm guessing they didn't send it or the eForm 4 certification from last Thursday isn't in their system yet (more than likely the latter). I sent an email to Silencer Shop over the weekend and they responded this afternoon saying my wait started w/ certification of the application. At any rate, looks like
the 3 months I've already been waiting was just a warm up. Other than the fact that it's a federal agency, I don't understand why it should take 3 months to start the approval process when everything is already on record. From my experience, the overall wait from my first suppressor to this one is getting longer, not shorter, despite measures they put in place.

If you dont have a control number yet, then you aren’t in their system and your official wait time hasn’t started. I’m sure the holidays have something to do with that. And yes, the wait times are getting worse. I think it’s by design. There’s only 15 people that approve stamps for the whole country.
