Sexed chicks aren't going to be 100%. It's an educated guess that their pretty good at, but you'll get a rooster slipped in. It happens. Most modern breeds are bred not to be broody, but they will set even without a rooster. Eggs can be fertile and will not develop unless left under a setting hen. Roosters are great but make noise and can get aggressive. If you get one, handle them a lot and don't take no shite off em. Lol
Free range is great and preferable if doable. Predators are a bitch. Everything likes to eat chicken. Overcrowding in s coop is really the quickest way to frick up. Watch out for chicken math. Once you get 3 you want 6.....,
They really are "set it and forget it". Get set up with some feed buckets (I got an easy plan for no waste feed buckets) and a big water barrel with nipples and they literally take care of themselves.

Oh, and they're garbage disposals. Literally eat anything you give em.
And they will absolutely frick up some pretty landscaping.

It's my understanding that the sex link (red star) chicks are 1 color for hens and another for roosters. That's 1 of the major advantages of raising them.

"Roosters make noise and can get aggressive."
Had a RIR rooster that got very aggressive. He spurred the back of my leg one day. I would be on guard after that, and when he would rush me, I'd kick the shite out of him. He got pretty good at sparring with me, and I had to up my game to get him.
He got out once and jumped my four year old daughter and knocked her down before I could get to him. Machete meet Rooster.

Mine are 3-4 years old. It's only a matter of time before they are dinner. They do still lay but not consistently. One day I was on the phone outside near the pen talking to a friend in Alabama who also had chickens and I mentioned I was going to kill them soon and in about two days they started laying again a lot. Lol...... Like they heard and understood what was going to happen.

That's correct. The bitties are colored different. Think it's a mark on their head. It's pretty damn fool proof, but I've seen a sex link rooster or two get slipped in. I've had great success with sex links. Great producers, not broody, great personalities. Probly one of your best bets for the backyard.

Nice setup.
Been waiting for a guinea to show up . . .
Mine's just a little simpler el cheapo version. I built this puppy brooder (5'x 12') several years ago and it's gone unused for awhile now. I've got some six foot clf panels from an old lift station I'll use to add a fenced run for them with a cover. There's a lot of varmints around my place, so they won't be free range.
A lady at work has been trying to give me some laying hens and I'm about to take her up on it. Should be good for 3??
