I wish all these retailers would just raise their prices and let the market dictate the going rate. It seems to me it would kill the secondary market and prices would soon return to somewhat normal. I just can't bring myself to stand in line at academy waiting to buy ammo nor am I going to pay ridiculous prices.

So you want retailers to raise the prices, but aren't willing to pay ridiculous prices? Let Academy, Wal-Mart, Cabela's, etc. start charging 10 cpr+ For .22lr and I guarantee everyone (including you) would be fussing about the ridiculous price of ammo.

ETA: I haven't stood in the first line, haven't bought the first round off the "secondary market", and haven't paid a ridiculous price, but I have all the ammo I need, and can buy more weekly if I desire.

No. If they raised their prices and took out the resellers the price would come down. That's a fact. Maybe not to .05/ round but it wouldn't be twenty either. And maybe it would stay on the shelves for a couple hours. Plus at some price you hoarders would be priced out of the market.

At Slidell Academy the other day I got into the ammo shortage issue with the gun salesman. He said they get plenty of 22 ammo coming in, but the same folks show up early every delivery day buying. He's sure they re-sell online somewhere and can't possibly use what they buy. Higher prices might curtail the hoarders/resellers and allow average consumers to have a reliable supply at retailers. But it is more complicated than that. It is localized. He said that most areas (including Texas) don't have this problem.
Next time I have a driving business trip to Texas, I may stock up.

Thank you Jesus someone with some sense has arrived. Exactly my point.
Did he mention why they don't just raise the price? As a corporation why sell something below market value and allow someone else to make that profit? And it's not like those people that show up everyday are going there to buy anything else. Certainly not as much as the average consumer.

If you want to buy .22lr at a higher price, just go online and do it. If you check gunbot.net, you'll be able to find .22lr at higher prices.

It sells out at the normal 5-6 cents per round very quickly, but you can pretty much always find some for 10-20 cents per round.

Nah, he was just a salesman, not a buyer or a pricing expert. He led me to believe that the prices were similar in whole regions whether a particular locality had a stock outage problem or not. I'm driving to LA tomorrow and will check availability around Daphne while I'm there.

Not what he said, but glad you're having fun. He's advocating raising them enough to discourage/prevent people buying the at "retail" and then reselling even higher. Raising them enough to prevent price arbitrage will allow the market to find it's new normal. All the average buyer wants is a predictable supply at a known price; retailers in SELA have not been providing that for several popular calibers, including 22LR.

Why ridicule the man for discussing an obvious problem in the marketplace?

Because his solution is an ignorant one and lacks a basic understanding of economics and business modeling.

High prices in a time of scarcity are a good thing.

The price does not need to be raised at Walmart. Most other retailers sell at higher prices and stock sits on the shelves. Free market, the dumb arse buyer who doesn't have 22lr is thankfully not responsible for store policy or "fair" pricing.

The percentage of people who understand this is very small.
