I have a couple of questions about tractors. I’m about to move on to 26 acres. Some woods but mostly pasture. I’m going to need a tractor to dig out some of a pre-existing pond. Also going to need a post hole digger attachment. What kind of tractor do you recommend and is it better to buy used?

I have a Kubota L4600 with a loader. Bought used. It was a 2013 with 275 hrs and paid 15900 for it. It doesn’t have all the new emissions crap on it. Love the tractor. Talked to a few folks that know their shite and all recommended Kubota over Mahindra.

How many hours would you say is too many for used? Thanks for the replies.

Kubota is a nicer machine than a Mahindra.

If you are going to try this with a tractor either have a great winch or a towing company on speed dial. To dig a pond out you really need a decent size track hoe.

Much so

Also much easier to find any required parts down the road

To the op

Hire a dozer for the pond work and a 50 hp tractor would fit almost any other requirement you have, I bought a Kubota L4701 and it is a fine little tractor.

Kubota is much nicer. A lot better fit and finish. I have a MX5100 with a FEL. It’s a little light in the back but only noticeable when moving something HEAVY. Very reliable tractor. It’s 8yrs old and no complaints. I live on a decent piece of land and use it regularly.

And don’t try to dig a pond with a tractor. That’s a job for an excavator or dozer

Kubota. End of thread.

With 0% financing, you’d be nuts to buy used unless you know the machine and it’s owner. Check out the local dealers and check out Beaumont tractor. They offer packages that could be beneficial to your situation. Get a front end loader before anything else and buy a bigger machine then you think you need. You’re gonna want a decent bush hog unless you want to log a lot of hours mowing your place. Trust me, the novelty of mowing wears off quickly. I’d get a 50 HP minimum. Shuttle shift is nice but not a deal breaker. The front bucket is. Get an 8 ft. Bush hog for mowing.

And don’t let anyone give you shite for buying a big, new tractor. It’s an investment that you’re gonna have for a long time. The naysayers aren’t the poor bastard trying to get chores done. You are. And in my experience, the convenience and productivity of a new machine far outweighs the cost and headaches of going used/cheaper. Trust me on this. Been there, done it.

Definitely agree with this. You’ve got some bush hogging to do, last thing you want to do is having to work on the tractor before you can mow.

Bought a small Ford 1975 2000 tractor that had 1900 hours. That was over 10 years ago. Had put around 1000 hours on it and it is still going strong. Just have to make sure one takes care of it.

I’d get a John Deere or Kubota. Whichever one has a good dealership in your area. And I’d probably buy new. They run smoking hot deals on those small tractors all the time.

Rent a dozer for a couple days to do the pond work.

I also have the kubota L4701 and it is a great machine. Any bigger and it gets harder to maneuver in right places plus requires a much heavier duty trailer and tow rig. It will swing a 6’ rotary cutter just fine and the loader can lift a decent amount. I also purchased a land pride grapple and it is by far my most used attachment at my timber / hunting property. Also get 4x4 and hydrostatic transmission. Hydro makes loader work enjoyable
