If you can find any Sporters or Featherweights in different calibers, as long as they arent magnum, they will all feel and look the same as the 06. Just so you can feel of them and see which model you like better.

well, the Sporter is in Spring and the Featherweight is in Katy...

Gotcha.

You're on your own then

Other than minute differences, they are the same rifle.

what is advantage, if any, of barrel length...22" vs. 24"

Less accuracy at range, and featherlite will give you more recoil

The final test will be putting your hands on it and finding which one feels best.

If I didn't have elk or something along those lines in my future I wouldn't bother with a 7mm Mag. Like I'm sure people have said on here already, and no I didn't read it, it's overkill on whitetails. And you shouldn't even be thinking about anything beyond 300 yrds if you aren't a serious shooter who's got a shitload of time behind a scope making a bruise on your shoulder.

As for 30.06 vs. 270, it makes no difference. They're interchangeable and can smack a whitetail down at whatever range you can hit it.

As for the rifle itself, I'm a 700 Remington partisan. Can make even the cheapest ones stack rounds on top of each other but if I was going for that kind of accuracy, I wouldn't choose any of those rounds, I'd pick something with a short action like .308.

That said, there are a lot of rifles these days that shoot sub MOA out the box and you're unlikely to ever need anything beyond that to kill a whitetail so get something that you're comfortable toting around all day and feel proud to show off because honestly, that's mostly what you're going to be doing with it at the camp, and something that won't make you flinch from recoil.

Invest at least as much in the optics and mounts that go on it. That's another subject though.

.280, 270, 7mm08 are my personal faves......

only problem w 280 is finding ammo at the holly pond alabama hardware store....

But today's best guns out of the are probably Tikka and Savage.

This is utter bullshite. Disregard everything else he says. They are great guns out the box, but you're never going to see one win a bench rest competition and there's reasons for that.

They are MORE THAN SUFFICIENT to kill a whitetail consistently. They are not the best guns out there these days though and never will be.

I am sorry I did not see where the OP was looking into competition bench rest shooting, and I doubt he plans on doing anything with the rifle out of the box other than mounting a scope and shooting factory ammo, and in that scenario I would put a lot of money on a tikka over a browning, winchester, and even a remingtion

OK, now lets talk ammunition since it looks like you're going '06.

Gonna just go ahead and freak errrrbody out and say for whitetails... find 125gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips pushing 3200 fps. You will never regret it. And as long as you aren't the worst shot in the world, or one of downshifts friends, you won't ever lose a deer either. Plus the recoil is lighter and you can get much more accurate with it as a result of not being scared of the beat down. Now that doesn't mean go buy reduced recoil shite... noooooOOOoooo. You want the high velocity.

And that's my contribution to the thread.

Talk amongst urselves...

Right. Which implies that he's not expecting much out of the rifle which doesn't give me much of a 'quality' feeling. Not unlike actually shooting a Savage or Tika.

It's not The Best Gun Out Today. Not by a longshot. It's more than sufficient though. This isn't the seventies anymore. Most all new rifles are sufficient right out the box for hunting. But to claim one is the best, especially when it can't shoot with some that are proven better designs for accuracy, is just trolling I suspect, thus my wide sweeping statement of an absolute to counter it.
