Question about hunting rifles...7mm Magnum vs. 30 .06 vs. .270

I recently went a gun store here in Houston, looking to buy my first rifle...a friend had recommended a Wincester 30 .06, but the gun store didn't have any in stock. However, they did have a Wincester 7mm Magnum. I don't need to buy a Wincester, but I liked how the gun looked and felt.
What I want to know is what is the ideal gun to buy for deer hunting...considering that most of the hunting will be done from 100-200 yards away in Texas...however, I want the flexibility to hunt bigger game from farther distances.
What is the biggest consideration when choosing between 7mm Magnum, 30 .06 and .270?

Welcome to the OB and either Of those calibers would be great for the hunting you have described.
Alo of it at those ranges with whitetails is personal preference.
ETA: I have a .270 and 7mm but primarily use the 270.

I'd narrow it down to .270 or .30-06
7mag is overkill IMO for deer inside 200 yards. Some here will tell you otherwise. I don't think the increase in recoil and ammo cost is worth it. If there's a chance you'll ever go elk hunting then the 7mag is probably worth it, but the .30-06 is more than adequate for elk.
.270 and .30-06 are the kings of the deer woods in Louisiana.

Personally, I prefer the .270, its a flatter shooting, more accurate rifle for me, and its more than enough for deer at the ranges you listed.
I have hunted with a .06 and its very similar, its what most of my family prefers, I just like the lower recoil and the flatter shooting round of the .270.
I have shot the 7mm Mag before, but never hunted with it. I think its big enough for Mule deer and maybe elk, but someone else would have to clarify that for me.
Again, for just deer, I would choose the .270 all day, every day. But I am a Remington Model 700 man, I would suggest that until the day I die.
ETA To clarify, the Remington M700 is a bolt action rifle you can find in those, and would recommend it over the Winchester.

270 is probably your best bet although a 30-06 can't be beat as an all around gun IMO. all this considering you are just deer hunting. I personally shoot a 300 win mag for deer hunting but I dont recommend it for a novice shooter and hunter. If You ever decide to go after big game anytime down the rd then I would suggest a mag caliber.

i have and use mainly 7 mags.
my recc to you would be 06, 270 or 308.. all of these are good calibers and you can pretty much buy each of these bullets at all sporting goods stores and at some country gas stations and bait stands, usually considerably cheaper than magnums..
Also, through the years I've tended to like the Remington 700 as the best out of the box accurate gun in the medium price level range..

Chicken, look at the 270 mag. It is a good round and perfect for what you'll be doing in Texas.

That should give you some options.

Tikka's are probably some of the smoothest feeling guns out of the box I have ever felt. I would go with a .270, a 7mm is over kill on most occasions.

Either 270 or 30-06 is beautiful. So are 308 and 7m-08 and 260.
Steer clear of the 7 mags. as they are one of the more useless cartriges concieved.
P.S. I own and have killed most of my deer with a 7 mag. they are over rated and unnecessary.
I won't go into rifle brand preferance.
