I'm not sure about the weather argument because we really haven't had a bad winter in several years, so I could see them surviving. There has also been a lot of cross breeding with other snakes that I would be not be surprised that some hybrid pythons make their way into Louisiana and actually thrive.

I get that the rest of the winter was mild, but we had almost two straight days of below freezing temps with wind chills in the teens right before Christmas last year. Pretty sure that would kill pythons.

I want to say they can't survive with temps under 40....we get that all the way to the coast every year

Two years of satsuma deaths at my house. February of 2021, we hit 11. Ice stayed on my porch for one week.

Last winter we had a pretty bad night or two as well, but can't recall the numbers.(looks like it was 15).

So yeah, they would all be dead.

He shot it and got arrested for it since it escaped from a zoo. Doubtful any of that is true.

That's not true. I know the guy that shot it, and I talked to him about it shortly after it happened. He was walking through a field hunting rabbits when the snake reared up its head above the knee high weeds. It scared the crap out of him and he shot it. A picture of Bruce and two other men holding up the snake was posted in the Houma Courier. No one got in trouble. A guy called up Bruce and told him it was his pet snake that had escaped a few years earlier. He was pissed that Bruce killed it and demanded that Bruce give him the snake so he could keep the skin. Bruce told him to kiss his arse.

In 2021 we had a week straight where it stayed almost below freezing the whole time

Every python is dead when that happens

Last year the 2 day event = dead

The events we had the last two years would have been 100% death rate.

yes as they were in the Northern most locales of their distribution in florida which is very much inline with south la.

I hope you guys are right because that's the last thing Louisiana needs is another invasive species to deal with. They have just flourished in Florida swamps and are clearly moving north and that's a little concerning.

They can't keep moving north in the US for the same reasons they can't keep moving north of their native range in Asia.

I remember reading an article about the pythons.Seems like there are some Rock pythons in Florida that are more cold tolerant than the Burmese pythons.
The fear was that if they cross bred the hybrid offspring could potentially survive along the whole Gulf coast including Louisiana.

I read that some years ago and it hasn’t happened yet.

Just because it hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it can't happen. There are clearly hybrid pythons out there and we have no clue what temperature they can handle and what they can't handle.

I hope all of you guys are correct that they can't survive in the LA swamps, but with climate change and with no knowledge about these hybrid snakes, I don't think it's a guarantee it won't happen!

Not a python but my next door neighbor's wife killed a 6+ foot red tailed boa that was chilling in their driveway a couple months back.

Pretty sure it was an escapee or turned loose because it sounded like it was pretty docile until she started beating it in the head with a garden tool.

What species hybridized? If they did, what genetic factors would allow for temperature tolerance different from the parents?

Scientist have confirmed that the burmese and the Indian rock python have created a hybrid snake and are currently living in the Florida Everglades. I would be interested to find out if any studies have been done on the hybrid snakes.

Speaking of pythons, this week snake hunters have reportedly captured the largest python ever in the state of Florida. It measured 19 feet and was caught in the Big Cypress National Preserve in Collier County near Naples.
