Anytime you're venturing into a new area pause and take a look behind every now and then. With the idea of noting a few landmarks for getting back the car. Your walk will not look the same coming out as it did going in and it's real easy to stumble into where someone else is hunting.
Especially in low light or get a free GPS app for your phone.

Don’t hunt public land.
Do buy and hunt your private land.
I've seen just as much drama on private as public.

Do -
Let your wife or hunting partner know where you are…. Nobody plans to fall, till they do
Bring a tourniquet
Bring a back up light and batteries
Bring toilette paper
Bring a way to start a fire
Bring a small boat of some kind if you have one, water access is always the best to beat other hunters, especially in the mid west.

Don’t -
Be afraid to talk to other hunters, they will be more helpful than expected.
Go in the woods without someone knowing where to find you.
Climb a tree without a harness, it will save your life. If you do hang, find a way to get pressure off your legs.
Keep walking if you hear a whistle, be respectful and turn around even if you don’t see another hunter.
Leave your trash, take care of the land and the land will take care of you.

Bring a compass. Don't trust your phone/GPS too much.

Bring 2 compasses.
I got turned around in Tensas after an evening hunt.It seemed like I had walked too far to hit the trail out.Compass indicated I was headed wrong direction but I was convinced the compass was wrong.
Pulled out 2nd compass and they both showed same thing, knew it was me screwed up and not the compass.

These apps work off GPS not a cellar tower. And you download the map of your location just in case. If you can't retrace your footsteps with something like the free GAIA app then a compass is likely way over your head.

In Tensas now. The Basemap app works great out here. Our group ran into a few other hunters, but only one was rude. Good hunt so far, two does down.

I'm going to try hunting public land this year. I lost half my land due to the owner of some of my land dying and his family not wanting to let anyone hunt it.
Scouted a couple of WMAs so far and fell in love with one of them. I'm willing to go to the bow only sections and hunt the hard access places and just try to figure out where I can fit in hoping to not piss anyone off.

Finding a spot on a gun weekend, especially for either sex, is where it can get complicated.

Oh you’re gonna piss someone off, they are gins piss you off….BUT you get used to it and start to understand it’s just part of the process. Send it, getting off leases and going public was the best decision I’ve made. Is it harder? Yep…is it more rewarding than that cookie cutter crap? Yep

The one closest to my house has little (20-50ac) sections in some of the gun areas that are open to bow only. I'm going to try those first but have have multiple spots picked out in case someone is at one of those.
I also intend to hunt the primitive only time slots. A lot of it is old virgin timber river bottom land. Absolutely beautiful woods and I can hunt hogs and deer.
