When I was a kid, we had a black lab named Mac. Black Mac as my Dad used to call him. Well our neighbor who was an absolute arse, had two Dobies....he would send to bark at us..they never crossed the cattle guard...but just came up to it as Mom, Dad and I would be walking to go to the road we ran on (Dad was in the Corps and Mom in the USN-R and they had to run for their PFTs). Well one day Ole Mac had enough...jumped the cattle guard caught one Dobie by the collar and slung him into a tree...and chased the other one into a 2 horse trailer...the gates were closed on that trailer...that dobie was scared. Good Ole Black Mac...damn good dog...now the standard for me by which I rate others. He was one in a million...RIP Mac.

My rececntly depated lab picked up 40 ducks one morning and blood trailed/found my biggest deer to date later that evening. I've had lots of dogs and proud moments, but that one sticks out.

My brother watched a rat run through the kitchen (they had just cut the long grass behind our house and they were everywhere for a few days), and it was followed by our dog. Next thing my brother knows, Dexter chomps on the rat. Blood starts to gush out, and Dexter runs straight for the back door looking at my brother to open it. He opens the door, and Dexter takes the bloody mess outside to finish up.

We had an Australian Shepard(Dixie) growing up who would walk with us every morning to the barn when we'd run the cattle in and she'd try to work them from the outside of the fence. A few times we let her in the lot and she ran them in by herself with no training or instructions at all. That was fairly impressive to see instinct take over like that.

She also was an absolute count to other animals. She'd get along with our other Australian Shepard and our Corgi but if anything else stepped in the yard it was on. It wouldn't be uncommon to walk out in the yard to find animals she'd have killed, snakes, opossums, the occasional stray cat, wild rabbits, etc. Didn't matter. She also beat the shite out of some pitbull that a trashy fella was walking down our street. Apparently the owner egged it on and was quite disappointed in the outcome. She had to be put down about a year ago. She was tough as nails.

I had a Lab/German sheppard once that was the best cattle dog I've ever had. The steers got out once and we played hell trying to get them back into the fence. TJ bayed and then pushed the last few back through the fence. He met his end on the highway chasing tail.

What kind of dog?

A good friend of mine has a black lab that can hunt well.

If he sees a mouse in the house he just barks at it.

When I was back in La in 2006, I was staying at this house we had been renting out getting it ready to sell. An "urban yute" jumped the fence from the next yard into ours and was trying to avoid the cops. My german shepherd went nuts, so the yute opened the gate and took off running. My dog chased him down, big the seat of his saggy drawers and pulled him to the ground.

He got up, tried to run and the cops caught up with him. He claimed dog bite, so the amber lamps came to get him.

It took everything I had to keep the cops from shooting the dog. In fact, she had to be quarantined for 10 days in Bossier Parish afterward for the slight scratch she gave the yute.

His family tried to sue me because of it. Never got anywhere.

Speaking of coyotes my buddy's grand parents had a problem with them taking their chickens. Well he's huge into hog hunting and has a 1/2 pit bull 1/2 black cur that's his main catch dog. Well he went out and stayed about 50 yds away in a tent one night. Well at about 2 in the morning the dog got up and started growling. Jacob let him off the chain and heard 3 loud squeals to find 2 coyotes torn to shreds and his dog had a slight scratch on it's ear.

Gotcha

Unfortunately this all happened a bit too quickly for any firearm action. The dog was sufficient though.

Miss her. She never made it back to Ak. Still tears me up to this day.

Awesome story. My brittany and lab haven't done shite other than be really friendly to everyone.

Well other than seeing the brittany point for the first time. That was pretty incredible.

I don't have a dog but one time I did throw my dummy in the backyard and I'll be dammed but my 5 yr old niece ran after that bastered picked it up in her mouth and brought it back. Shocked my arse. I definitely have a new hunting partner.

I guess when his first bloodtrail was over a mile and he bayed the shite out of the deer at 7 months old. Did an incredible job.
