My dad has a 35 whelen that I love to shoot. Would like to pick up a different caliber just for the hell of it. What’s the OB’s go-to primitive caliber for whitetail?

.444 is a beast. I've been shooting one for 8 years. Little Harrington and Richardson. I use it when I'm in thick woods. I've never had a deer take a step, even the one I gut shot with it.

I’ve heard good things about that one. How far do you feel comfortable reaching out with it?

35 Wheelen is basically a single shot 30’06. Not exactly “primitive”, but it’s deadly.

I bought one a few years ago for Midwestern gun hunts. It has become my most favorite rifle in my safe.

35 Whelen is the best choice if you don’t already have a “primitive” weapon. Like the other guy said, there’s nothing primitive about it.

I have a 45-70 from when that was the rule An it’s ok but it kicks like a mule. If I had it to do again I would get a 35 with a nightforce an shoot out to 500-600 yards. I would wear a flannel shirt to keep everything primitive An stuff!!!

I shoot 35 Remington. Have it in a crack barrel for primitive season and lever gun for rifle season. Not a very common caliber anymore, but I like it and it gets the job done.

35 Whelen is my all season rifle now unless I’m sitting a long powerline.
