Location: NW Arky

I'll preface this by stating that I'm not one to make stuff like this up, and my modest post count should attest to my lack of a desire to troll.

I'm working from home waiting for my wife to deliver our next child any day, and I decided I'd go for a run around 2pm.

There's a great spot near me with a paved trail, ballpark, and dogpark that all back up to a dam with a large lake, waterfall, creek, etc.

I finish my run and decide to walk up the service road to the dam and chill by the lake for a few. This road is a steep hill and heavily wooded on both sides, perhaps a half mile long.

A hundred yards up the hill, I think I see a dog (remember there's a dogpark nearby), and I take a few seconds to realize it's not a dog. Maybe 250 yards away.

It was a bit bigger than a border collie, only with longer legs. Dark, dirty brown with some white.

I follow, telling myself this can't be a mt. lion, it's got to be a big bobcat. I don't see much of a tail that I can tell.

I, like an idiot, continue to follow.

It crosses over the road and speeds up, and as it goes to turn the corner to the lake, it realizes I'm back there, turns to look at me, and flicks it's long tail. The head was certainly feline-looking.

It jets around the corner toward the dam.

By then I realize that I've followed into a place where I have only one outlet, and it's creepy quiet - I've got a baby on the way and don't need to be following cats.

Does this sound like a possible mt. lion?

I have a picture, a very shitty picture from 75-100yds away and I'll post later.

The only reason I had a phone with me was because the baby's coming any day.

NWAR definitely has mountain lions. My FIL lives over there. "Panther Mountain" didn't get its name for nothing.

No doubt in my mind you saw a mountain lion.

I was driving back home from Alexandria about two months ago on US 167, heading towards Ville Platte.

I came around a slight curve in the Clearwater area and something crossed the road about 75 yards in front of me. It was a dark tan color, with black on the paws, and a long tail Definitely a cat. It was MUCH bigger than a bobcat. It crossed the road at a trot and I got a good look at it.

I only wish I'd had a GoPro mounted on my dash, because I'm sure all the Cenla "experts" on this board are going to tell me I saw a coyote.

Haven't you seen "Where the Red Fern Grows"? Definitely took place in the Ozarks of Arkansas.

It is probable. They are making a comeback to areas where they have lived for thousands of years. They are protected in areas now and young males are being pushed out to get their own territories.

Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and East Texas have viable populations. These cats need to go some place to establish territories. They will go East and South to find land.

If this was in NW Arky, a definite possibility. They love the terrain. There's lots of deer, elk and other game they can feed on.

I had one follow me about a mile as I waded down a creek in the ozarks. It was way up on a cliff/ridge. I stayed on the deepest water the whole way to the truck. Figured I could fight it off better there. Didn't see it the last 400-500 yards 2 bends in the creek. But pretty scary. They can mess you up good

From what you described, you definitely saw a large cat. Nothing moves like a big cat, and if you see one jump a high distance, your brain will have trouble processing what you've seen. I've seen one, and fortunately I had another person with me who can verify.

I worked for a Wildlife and Fisheries agency a long time ago, and used to be skeptical because of the company line from the biologists and mammalogists I worked with. I don't argue that the one I saw is part of a breeding population, and readily admit that it might have been dumped or escaped from captivity. A lot of captive mountain lions were released when a law (federal, I assume) passed awhile back making it illegal to keep large cats.

I think I've heard that Arkansas does have some, and those things cover a lot of ground. This article should give some doubters pause. LINK

They can if you don't see them before they pounce. However, they are skittish like most cats. You can scare them off fairly easily by being more aggressive in behavior than the prey they are normally comfortable with. Shouting harsh sounds, waving your arms, etc....

Don't thank me for that tidbit, thank Louis L'amour, and then thank me for reading his books. For the record, despite learning it in a fiction novel, tis true.

If a large male mountain lion wanted to take you out nothing you could do would stop it. You would never see it before the attack. This board is fricking great.

Most wild animals would rather avoid a fight, but a mountain lion can kill you if it wants. Chances are you wouldn't see it coming. They pounce from higher ground and use their weight to try to break the necks of their prey.

When defending themselves? They are incredibly fast and aggressive.
