IMO, its impossible to get in good enough shape in Louisiana. The altitude factor totally kicked my arse.

Lose any extra weight and get your Bmi in range. Should solve alot of problems.

Either antelope or mule deer. Thinking antelope first to get my feet wet. I've been buying Wyoming priority points for a few years now

Don’t underestimate strength, body weight workouts are great but some strength training may help. It sounds like you are pretty fit with the amount of activity you are already doing

I have no West experience, but i do all that just to hunt here in La . Sounds like you are doing well.

I scout my friend's place in Roxie, MS for him often. Those big bluffs and deep bottoms. Climbing straight up on a gps course, that will challenge your fitness.

I hunt forest land near there. Last year I got absolutely torched and really felt my age getting deer out.

Are you hunting at high altitudes? A buddy of mine is a big time sheep hunter and would run on a treadmill breathing through a straw. Sounds funny but makes alit of sense!

I'd cut out the runs/jogs and add some 400-600m sprints 1-2x a week
-stair master is the best thing you can do imo or incline walking
-Keep doing the rucking at the weight you want.

-Stairs and sprints will dial you in I think

Pick a hunt unit that suits your conditioning. Antelope can be hunted at fairly low elevation. I killed a WYO elk at 4,500’.

I've been hunting out west (colorado, Idaho, montana) from 6 to over 10K ft since 2011

Stadiums or stairmaster with pack is th best training I've come across.

Most are right, get there a day early. Do some sprints and slightly stress ur body. Get the feel for it. Acclimation takes me about 4 days. After 6 days, I usually can kick arse up there.

Last tip... pound some pedialyte before and after first days hike in.

Loup, in addition to the great workouts you listed, think seriously about healthy eating. Every pound you can cut will make you that much more efficient in the mountains. I love the food culture of the Deep South, but it is often not your friend.
I’ve made a serious commitment to better shape so that I can enjoy a few more Western hunts before I’m done. I’m nearing retirement and have 13 elk points in Colorado, Arizona, and Wyoming. I plan on DIY and enjoying every one of them.
Picked up a second draw Colorado tag this year to go with my son and his buddy in the first season. I’m hoping to enjoy it more with improved fitness.
Leave an email address if you ever want to discuss Western DIY further. I’ve been researching it for along time and have hunted multiple states over the years.

Last couple of years we have done an elk trip in colorado, usually around 8-10k feet. Last year we did 50 miles in 5.5 days but the thing that killed me was climbing the hills. Have been doing more stairmaster this year so hoping that helps. Also have been trying to do some long walks a couple times a week, 4-5 miles each, along with some runs.

But like the others said, it's the elevation that gets you. Drink as much water as possible the days before

Diamox?

Came here to recommend this. I take it every time I'm going up in elevation bc I've had some terrible experiences with altitude sickness. Works great

Working on losing weight

quote:
currently do 30 to 60 minutes of running 4 or 5 days a week on varied terrain. ~10 to 12 minute per mile pace.

I lift weights or do bodyweight workouts on my lunch break 4 or 5 days a week.

I carry a ~50 lb pack when I walk my dog (1 to 2 miles) every morning.

How do you need to lose weight if you do all of this? If I did that I’d be a string bean

thats what i was thinking. you run 30-60 mins 5 times a week? unles you just started that last week, how are you ot nin some sort of decent shape?

Added the running in a month or so ago.

I said in another post that I'd gained about 25 lbs in 2020. I really really really like to eat. I'm down about 10 lbs so far. I'm a short baw so 25 lbs is a lot of extra weight on me that I don't need.

ok well it would seem running a hour 5 times a day would be pretty strenuous for just starting a month prior. Im not dogging you just pointing out things that stand out.

Join gym for access: wear 50lb pack and get on a stair climber. Use an elliptical machine as well w/o pack and with pack.

High protein low carbs. Protein fuels your body for longer periods.

Note: an elliptical machine is easier on your hips and knees than running/jogging and is a great cardio workout as is the stair climber.

gotcha, I did about 20 minutes for the first week or two. I used to run a lot so it was just about getting back in to the swing of things.
