So this drought is starting to put a hammer on my pond. Water level lowering and algae taking off.

I am debating between having someone come out and look at it or doing it myself with spray a herbicide or something similar.

Won't copper sulfate take care of it? Or am I thinking of it something else?

ETA: I few years ago, I had a bunch of algae/grass growing in mine.

I bought 30ish hybrid grass carp and put in it. They took care of all the grass. My lake is ~10 acres and pretty deep in the most of it. There are some shallower parts that is where the grass/algae grows.

The carp are getting big. We saw them swimming around this spring and they were 5-8 lbs.

This pond is small but does have bass in it so I want to make sure I don't kill them with whatever I put in it.

Maybe put in a pond dye to block the sun.

Copper Sulfate. Treat a small section every 4 days or so.

Wear gloves and a dust mask.

Make sure you properly identify what you're attacking, so you can best treat it. I would look into Cutrine Plus vs a regular copper sulfate. It's a chelated form of elemental copper, so is much milder on your water and fish.

I can’t stand the sight of the algae blooms, but I’ve never messed with it. I haven’t had any problems with the bass or bream.

I wish somebody nearby had some grass carp to sell me.

Yea the previous owner said he would just let it go.

Before this drought, like a month ago it did not have algae.

In the same boat. This heat is evaporating my water like crazy along with the increase in algae. I did rig up a temp water line from my well to my pond to help with the evaporation which has been slow process for my 1 acre pond. In addition to that I typically use pond dye and barley extract which help with the algae control.

Would need to know the size of the waterbody, but killing the algae you have now will only release the nutrients the algae has absorbed back into your pond. Removing the algae physically would at least ameliorate this but still depends on the size and depth of the pond. Is the pond stocked? Are you experiencing mortality? Triploid carp is not a bad idea. Need more info.

We just recently bought the property. It has bass and perch. It is small, between and .25-.5 acre. Not sure on the depth, I need to get the waders on and see.

In the future, keep it fertilized. Not expensive for a small pond that size. It keeps a plankton bloom going which is the basis of the food chain for your fish, and the blooms tint the water light green and shade out sunlight preventing the algae mats from forming in the first place. There's a million videos and articles out there on how to do it.

Copper sulfate and muriatic acid mixed in water, heat to a boil, apply at 1/2 gal per acre once a week

It all starts with alkalinity and proper depth and slopes off the bank. Then fertilization with high phosphorus/low nitrogen pond fertilizer in the growing months. The goal is 16-24 inches of visibility on a seschi disk, which indicates a proper level of plankton. This keeps the sunlight limited, which inhibits weeds, and the consensus of biologists is that up to 10x of the fish can be removed from a properly fertilized pond vs a non fertilized pond.

Depth would certainly help but that's a pretty small pond. I wouldn't mess with it right now honestly. The algae is at least is providing some shade for the fish and forage. If the mats start to show signs of decay manually remove them. Reapproach this in the fall.

Put tilapia in the pond and watch how quickly your problem disappears. They will die off in late November but they will eat all of the sludge and vegetation better than carp.

You have a pond, and new to the game, then read this —- about a dozen times or until you understand it. Managing Mississippi Ponds and Small Lakes . Then you’ll be knowledgeable enough to ask the right questions on aquatic weed control & management.

Tilapia - you in Louisiana? Highly illegal.
