Clearly you know nothing about it.

Guess not. What's the issue with spear fishing? Seems like it's the one way to harvest fish where you are only killing what you choose to harvest.

I would have to be enlightened on this one as well, the only time I have ever had a problem with spearfishermen is being on a rig to have them pull up while I'm already there, drop divers and then bitch that I'm still fishing while they are diving.

They abide by the same limits as fishermen so I don't see the beef other than stuff like I described.

Illegal in many countries. If legal, then often limited by not allowing with scuba. Just a bunch of misinformation and over reaction. There can be fish that are wounded and not retrieved but that number pales in comparison to commercial fishing or other big fish kills like oil spills and red tide for that matter. Then they blame spear fisherman for reef damage which also is so minimal compared to plain old tourist snorkelers. spear fisherman are great snorkelers. Just a bunch of over reaction and lack of common sense that has given spear fishing a bad name.

Periodic net failures in the menhaden fishery do occur, and large fish kills of menhaden and sport fish may occur. However, bycatch expansion data in the shrimp fishery substantially exceeds bycatch in the menhaden fishery.

Sport fishermen should address both fisheries.

But everyone, including me, loves eating shrimp, and ignores the impacts of the shrimp fishery bycatch.

Bayou - thanks for the info. Heres a fun fact. The bycatch alone from the menhaden fishery is more than three times the total catch of the shrimp industry in Louisiana. Yep, the bycatch of menhaden industry annually exceeds 200 Million pounds. Not including the “net tares” that kill 900,000 lbs here or there.
