Please Bring a box of extra fuses with you if going offshore

This is from a good friend of mine, a guy who is an excellent fisherman, and charter boat captain fishing on relatives boat 31 foot boat Friday and Saturday. He grew up on the water, and his family has been main stays on Coast for 100s of years. He is salty as hell.
Friday night.
Great sunset headed out the pass there wasn’t a cloud in the sky but more wind than forecasted seas 3-4 instead of 2ft. Looked at buoy forecast 30 miles offshore where we were headed and it showed wind at 8 knts so we headed out anyway We could only run about 18 mph in the chop and we got about 20 miles offshore and noticed lightening way back behind us over land. We Pulled up radar and saw this huge thunderstorm from North headed our way and no where to go to get around it. Wind line hit and went from 3-4 to 7-8 with deep swells. Had no choice but to turn into the seas and took one over the bow that flooded the cabin and all our shite got soaked. It knocked out Nav lights, sonar/gps/radar, radio, live well, all interior lights and the generator. Checked fuse panel using cell phone flashlight and saw the big 30amp fuses were blown and discover they had no spare fuses on board. Thank god for auto bilge wired directly to auxiliary battery! We had to limp back in and got to Ft Morgan Marina at 2a.m and crashed! We Got everything back up except generator which ran AC and fridge/freezer so we wasted 4 boxes of squid and two boxes of cigar minnows. Lesson learned always carry backup fuses on your boat!
That was supposed to be an overnight sword and tile trip with snapper on return and damn near was a tragedy.

Snotty seas in the dark. Easy to do, especially in 8's.
You gotta draw the line somewhere short of bringing a spare everything and that's hard to do. I personally have a box of fuses, spare wheel and nut and cotter pin, about 20' of wire, small electrical kit, a fuel filter, manual hand bilge pump, and assorted tools. Also have plenty of plugs for every thru hull size I have and a few cone snapped rubber scupper plugs

thats what swivels are for, jumping fuses
its that doesnt work just twist the damn wires together
also, i keep an old pill bottle with extra fuses taped to the dash wire harness just in case

I keep spare fuses in everything electrical. I think I have every size and amp fuse made.

Yep I’d jumped the circuit or spliced the wires.
Have done this before when in dire need. Usually on others peoples boat of course. I keep too much spare crap in my boat.

spare wheel
After carrying one out to a buddy that spun a hub 25 miles out and was trying to come back on a 15 hp kicker, I will be adding this to my supplies this week.

I’m not talking about taking one over the bow
I’m asking how does water get in the cabin
I’m genuinely not being a dick, I’m curious what boat he has that allows that or if that’s a common occurrence when you take one over the bow

That guy has bigger issues than a blown fuse.

Why in the hell would you not just put something in to connect the circuit. You are in an emergency situation do what ever it takes to get back to land.

do i really have to explain to you that a swivel is a made of thin wire that can easily be bent and stuck in to jump the burnt fuse

You guys obviously didn't look at the forecast too well. That front was pushing thru Friday and packing storms with it. More to look at than just looking at sea forecast. And yes it was calling for decent seas but come onnnnn..Always have back ups glad you made it back safely.

That’s why I don’t use fuses. Circuit breakers are better for this exact reason IMO, among a few others.
Currently rewiring a 33 contender we just picked up, and it’s all breakers no fuses. Only fuse is the 300A main house battery terminal fuse protecting the main wire going to battery switch, and that has a spare attached. Even if that failed, in an emergency situation it’s easy enough to just move main battery cable off it directly to battery post anyway.
Made a panel for the push reset breakers for everything up to 30A. Large thermal breakers on the right for larger loads.

Prolly a cuddy cabin boat at only 30'
Big swell over the bow floods the deck and can't get out the scuppers quick enough and cabin not fully battened down.

Luckily the "mission critical" stuff came with breakers on my boat. There are still fuses though, but on "fishing" stuff, not need to have to get home stuff.

The seas we not the primary problem here, shite is less likely to happen when properly prepared.
