Anybody got any opinions on these reels? I'm looking for a couple good reels to surf fish with a few times a year. The spinfisher VI line has the basic spinner, the Live Liner, and the Long Cast. Then there's all the different reel sizes for each. I'm a little overwhelmed and any advice would be appreciated.

You need to make long casts from the beach. They make it easy for you to choose with the name.

SSVI6500LC --- I'd likely buy this model number reel

That's what I was looking at, but some reviews said that it was pretty heavy and not much fun to deal with all day.

I have a few for offshore, rig/reef dropping, casting, etc. I like them...good reels. I have 5000 and 6000's.

If your casting the weighted rigs with bait and a 10 ft rod then it's going to sitting in a rod holder most of the day. If you are actively casting and retrieving artificial lures then you might be sacrificing distance with a more manageable outfit.

I have 2 of the 2500s. I'm on year 2 with them and they've been flawless. Just wish they were a tad bit lighter.

I run a 2500 with a St Croix Mojo out the boat.

It’s a strong arse rig.

I have two Battle 3s. One 2500 and one 6000. They have been reliable reels. I’m sure the spinfisher is just as reliable.

Exactly, then the weight of the reel is of marginal concern, to me. This is what I do when I surf fish.

I've got the 7500 long cast for chunking poppers at tuna. works well with 65# braid.

I don't recommend the live line. More stuff to fail and get corroded.

Find one you like and send it off with a reel repair guy and get him to lube it up for you and put a small coat before you start using it. Esp if you are only going to use it a few times a year

I have a few of them and like them for the price and some sealed off areas. I’m a penn person even tho they tend to be heavier. I would not cast and retrieve a 6500/5500 in the surf all day if I can help it. I have 65s for bigger fish with live or cut bait on a heavy 10’ rod, 55s on a 11’ med for most of the surf fishing I do. Then I have a 4500 on a 9’6 med and a 3500 on a 8’8 med rod for lure fishing. Don’t get a live liner just make your drag stupid loose in the holder. Tsunami airwave elite rods.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll be doing half my fishing with rod holders and the other half on jetties. Would y'all go with a 2500 to a 4500 for the jetties and maybe a 6500 long cast for the beach?

I think a 2500 might be a tad small for jetties. It also depends on the length of the rod you want. Longer rods are more tip heavy and I personally like to have it all balance right around the spool with one finger. Makes for better fishing all day. I’d stick to a 35-4500 for jetties and 55-65 for the beach. I have never used a LC model before.

Nah 4500 is the sweet spot, and 65/5500 for dead and weighted baits from shore

The 4500 has a bail-less option. Is that something worth looking into? I grew up with baitcasters so spinning reels are a new world to me

I have a VS100 that is bailess, it's really personal preference. I grab my line with my index finger on my hand that is holding the rod and start reeling, the line catches and spools fine. When I fish with my other spinning reels I close the bail by hand, so it's 6 or a half dozen IMHO

Never had a bail less model spinner. I have used spinners my whole life except for a short spell when I wanted to try out a bait caster

I close the bail by hand after I cast out of habit.
