Delta.... We saw someone last week camped out on delta and hunting out of a duck boat, both against the regulations down there. All air cooled engines are prohibited there.
Hope you called the delta law enforcement group after seeing that. That is absolutely ridiculous. Was it in the main part od the southern part by PAL?

Like someone already said, I’d be against taking a mudboat or any kind of duckboat down that river. I’ve never hunted down there but I’ve fished down there a lot and safety is a huge priority, even for us in a 27 foot bay boat. That river can be very unforgiving and a small mistake can turn into a huge one

Attaboy, let’s just give maps to everyone on the Internet even though there’s already 10000000 different people hunting off Baptiste already...

I had a USFWS biologist on my boat believe me enforcement was called.
Fog was there but patchy. We had to use radar every day.

the river is no place for a surface drive. Stalls are common when whipped up waves create spray. It is also the most unforgiving place one can hunt. Despite having an open invite to stay in the comfort of pilot town, I have not hunted down there since January of 1989. Too much can go wrong. The river down there takes no prisoners.

Chivos going to hunt “your” land?

Lol ,, I love listening to guys argue about how thats their “ spot” then proceed to state how long them and their uncles and pawpaw have posted up in that “spot”.
I think the constitution says “ thereby any person or persons who have hunted or fished a spot For a period of 25yrs shall be granted that Spot until death or death of the third generation”!!

Is atchafalaya delta any less sketchy trek then Venice?
You can put in the Calumet Cut and it's a straight 12 mile boat ride to the Wax Lake outlet without much boat traffic. Seems like that would be safer to me.

We have crossed the jump to BCin surface drive bit always had at least a 21 foot boat I the lead. Tuck gator tail behind bigger boat and have only one guy in gator tail. Also 3rd guy has eyes on gator tail entire crossing.
Never went if too choppy or fog. Bigger boat has radar if we want to run down river.
Had two incidents almost happen. Was a could have gone bad in 5 more seconds. I had nightmares about what could have happened.
I don’t hunt down there except Teal season now.

I've hunted the wax for years. it's a unforgiving place to hunt as well. crewboats/tugs in the fog, dumbass coonazzes at all times, and getting stuck out in the fog. been there, done that. now I just hunt my local overcrowded lakes. lol

Hammer, how was the fog when you were down the last couple days?
Yesterday was foggy all day. Today it cleared early and was windy and fricking cold.
I’ve run that area off and on since 1986 or so and it can be very unforgiving and man it’s rough on your gear. I’m older now with more varied interests and naturally less time so I don’t get down there often and it’s certainly changed a lot-tons more people so I’m ok not being down there as much.
But the Judge Perez pilot boat coming out of Pilottown hasn’t changed and will run your arse over if you get in his way. Dick, but good to see some things don’t change. Sad to see Port Eads die and Buzzy gone.

You can tell who in this thread hunts Venice and is getting aggravated because they don't have it to themselves like they used to, therefore they act like it's the most dangerous place on the planet. I agree it's sketchy, but who doesn't do a little bit of research before any boating whatsoever, much less a a duck trip on the MS river? Not everyone is misinformed. Plenty of birds getting killed safely and legally. Venice is the best duck hunting is the state.
eta: my point is that you have to do PLENTY of research before you go hunt anywhere, not just LA, so do yourself due diligence and use some common sense and you'll be okay.

I don’t hunt it anymore so no dogs in the fight.
Being informed is one thing, reality is every year a boat or two goes down and every few years someone drowns.
Winter time duck season is a mix of south wind and fog and chop from up current winds or hard north winds of a front.
Can it be done yes, heck every weekend a ton of boats do it. The OP just needs to recognize what he’s getting into and maybe follow a bigger boat so he can see what it’s all about the first time.

You can call me whatever you want down there. I try and give advice to anyone on here that is realistic for down there. I have taken numerous OB members hunting and fishing down there over the years.
Fact of the matter is twice in the last three years I’ve gotten the call to help search and rescue for duck hunters that capsized in boats that weren’t meant for the conditions.
Duck boats with 16” sides are NOT meant to run the river. On a calm day it certainly can be done however people think they can operate down there any time it’s simply not the case. Until people start to understand their limitations it will continue. FOG with or without radar is dangerous. Heavy winds are dangerous. Big ship wakes especially big crew boat wakes are dangerous.
I’m not in the CG or LE but I get called to go help look and I would love it if I never got the call again because people understand their limitations.

I didn't call you anything. I'm just saying, these threads time after time just discourage people from going down there to hunt. Just use your brain and you won't have an issue. If you're dumb enough to just launch your boat and take off down river, well then that's on you.

Lol, take a look at Westbank Seatow’s Facebook page to see how often shite goes bad down there.

Pretty obvious you have not spent a lot of time down there if you think someone can just read some stuff on the internet and start hunting safely down river.
It’s not just hunters that talk about the dangers of traveling the river, go read hull truth and see what people with experience say when people new to the area want to start learning the area.

I’m not convinced discouraging people without the proper equipment is wrong.

I've camped in PAL and spent enough time on the river to know the obvious dos and dont's.
read the internet, talk to locals, check the weather, etc.
It's the same due diligence you should be allowing yourself before hunting or boating ANYWHERE.
