Ascend I figure ill be around $800 after kayak, paddle, and life vest or I can get Tarpon 120 for $1,100 which comes with paddle and vest. Have looked used but just haven't found what I wanted. Is the Tarpon worth the extra $300. Will be my first kayak. Thanks

Fit and finish will be a little better on Tarpon BUT it is not meant to stand and fish.
Tarpon is a faster kayak, great for traveling longer distances.
Where and what style of fishing do you plan on doing?

We have a bar ditch along the river at the deer lease I would like to do some freshwater fishing in but would also like to fish in the marshes occasionally. I was set on the Native Manta Ray 12 for a while because the seat was very comfortable but it is discontinued now.

I think the Ascend would be best.
It has a pretty flat deck with quite a bit of room, good storage and you can stand and fish.

If you're willing to spend 1k, find you a yak with pedals. Paddling starts to suck after a while.

I agree. If you wait for the right deal, you can find a used out acknowledge for around 1100

You can definitely find a nice used setup for $1100 that will allow you to stand and fish. With summer right around the corner, you will start to see more people selling kayaks, whether its from winning them in tournaments or upgrading for the summer season, etc.
I'd say keep perusing CL, BCKFC, the LKFC forum and even Texaskayakfisherman.com You may find a deal worth a little drive.
As for pedals vs. paddle, it's possible to find something in your range- I sold a Hobie Revo recently for $1000; deals can be had, you just have to look.
But if you're sticking with the 2 you listed, probably go with the ascend and save the few extra bucks and buy a couple new rods and reels.

Polar Pop nailed it. Tarpon is a little more quality and faster, but if you plan on standing and fishing at all I would go with Ascend. Ascend will be much more stable and its a pretty good value for the price.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna go with the ascend. The reviews are really good and for the price you really can't beat it. Thanks for the help

I think you can get away with less than $800 with the ascend unless you're buying a $250 paddle.

Tarpon is faster and more stable. Not sure how you get to $800 on an Ascend though. $250 paddle?

If I were doing it again, I'd get the Ascend. That seat on the Tarpon would have me on the bank after a few hours. I may even sell my Emotion just to get an Ascend for that seat.

Nice seats like that are crucial for a long day on the water.

The high back on the Ascend seat is nice. Padding it with a life jacket hung between you and the seat is the icing on the cake.

I started out with the Ascend and eventually upgraded to a Slayer. I'd say the Ascend seat is just as comfortable as the seat in the Slayer just without the high/low adjustments. Honestly aside from a couple quality control issues the Ascend is the best bang for your buck bargain out there.

I had to build a foam seat with a crease for my arse bone to prevent unbearable coccyx pain.

He's needing a pfd as well.
Assuming he plans on actually wearing it for safety, he's looking at spending $75-150 for a comfortable pfd such as the Stohlquist Fisherman or an inflatable.
Since its a paddle kayak, if he buys a quality paddle from the start, he's looking at $100-150
So his estimate of $800 is a fair assessment. $600 for the kayak (after tax), plus $150-300 for the paddle and pfd.
OP: don't forget to budget for some of the essentials: anchor trolley, rod holders, crate, fish bag, stake out pole, kayak cart, etc.
Welcome to the addiction.

ETA: yes, he can go buy a cheap paddle for $40 at academy and get one of the orange horsecollar pfds for $15. . . If you use those and like them, more power to ya! I bought a used kayak once that came with the cheap aluminum paddle- they're heavy and after a long day on the water you will be wishing for that fiberglass paddle!
