quote:Acad has many a nice one for under $100. Other than length, I can't tell the difference between mine cheap one and Mung's high dolla one. Sure, his has more adjustments, but mine can feather and has the flattened shaft feature. Really like it.
Since its a paddle kayak, if he buys a quality paddle from the start, he's looking at $100-150

I bought the $25 no limit from Academy... I should have gone with a $140 bending branches in hindsight. It's no big deal for a 3 hour morning trip, but I can see how it would make a big difference on an all day excursion.

I think their good one is about $75? The cheaper ones are aluminum and I definitely don't suggest that he go with one of those. OP may be able to get a carbon/glass paddle from BassPro for $75ish as well. My statement of $100 was based off what you can get from Werner or Bending Branches.
Biggest difference as you increase in price is the weight of the paddle and the rigidity of the material. The paddle I use is the Bending Branches Angler Pro. . . it doesn't have any more adjustment options than the $50 paddle from Academy, but it is super lightweight which does make a difference after a long day. And the blades are extremely rigid and this makes a difference when you use your paddle to push off of structure or through mud.
Do I think a $300 paddle is right for everyone? Absolutely not; I would never spend that much on a paddle myself! (got it half price)

Yes, was figuring around $200 for a quality paddle and pfd

I like the Carlisles. My Magic is $60. The Predator and Magic Plus are $80.

I have the black No Limits Propel ($25) paddle from Academy and the Bending Branches Scout Angler paddle ($100). I can't really tell the difference. I end up using the No Limits paddle more because it's longer.

Ascend I figure ill be around $800 after kayak, paddle, and life vest or I can get Tarpon 120 for $1,100 which comes with paddle and vest. Have looked used but just haven't found what I wanted. Is the Tarpon worth the extra $300. Will be my first kayak. Thanks
I've been doing a good bit of research into Kayaks, and the Tarpon is not meant for fishing at all. It is meant for long distance kayaking.
If you're interested in the Wilderness System's Kayaks... the ones to look at are the Pungos. They are functional, do it all kayaks that seem to be the best bang for the buck with my research. If you live in BR, The Backpacker and Masseys are doing kayak demo days this month.

I wouldnt go that far. The Tarpon is very much meant for fishing. It is just geared towards more of a coastal, long distance, even BTB scenario.
It just lacks deck space and the ability to stand and fish.

The Pungos are sit in kayaks, which leave you extremely limited when it comes to fishing.

I would not recommend that kayak if you plan on fishing.

My bad, I got it mixed up with the Tsunami :/ For some reason I remembered the Tarpon as a ride in model.

They have an angler version, if I'm not mistaken, which received some good press and I've been told good things about.
As always, it could be hearing that through the lens of sit in fishing kayaks that it's good.

Even then, sit-ins are not ideal for kayak fishing.

That's why I bought the same one. It was the cheapest 240cm paddle I could find. I'm not short and the elevated chair in the Ascend FS12T creates the need for a longer paddle.

As far as sit in is concerned, I LOVE their Commander.
