We have had some almost daily Orca sightings in town over the past 3 months. Someone in Haines (70 miles north of here) captured this footage from a pier. Dall's Porpoise have a similar black/white scheme as Orcas, they love to play in the wakes of vessels.

In the end, porpoise loses. Fun starts at about 30 sec.

Can we get a couple of Orcas down to Grand Isle to thin out the porpoise/dolphin population around the island?

I can usually tell if a pod is in the area when I pass by the docks. Sea Lions find shelter on docks, buoys, boats...whatever they can find. They'll take over if Orcas are near.

If I remember right there is a big pod in the gulf.

Relatively. Theres a fjord between Juneau and Haines, this pod and a couple of others have been running a circuit this spring and early summer. Haines is about 70 miles North of here.

Once they got it surrounded and cornered just a matter of time.

Yep, thats a decent sized group. They surrounded him and wore him out. Eventually they make mistakes, I guess.

Nature is just amazing. And very jealous of the views. Alaskan vacation was the greatest trip I’ve ever been on and going to be hard to beat.

Impressive how they eventually all worked together as a group.

They were pretty stealthy. Two had slipped off and were prepared when the porpoise tried to run for it.

Pretty crazy they have never killed a human in the wild.

I read that they kill prey, but only eat the liver. Is that true?

Yep. There are cases where they mess with fishermen in boats, but so far no one has been killed.

They are also devastating to the King Salmon population.

That's just when killing sharks. There's some protein in the shark liver, or something.
