Opinion on Ruger .300 Blackout?

Any good/bad experiences out there with the Ruger AR 556 .300 Blackout? I deer & hog hunt and am considering getting something different from the old 30.06 Woodsmaster that I've been taking each year.

I kind of want one. I already have a blackout though. Anderson lower/PSA upper. Killed a few deer this weekend with it. Barnes 110gr vortx works great.

Its a round designed to be suppressed, so I'm not sure I would own one with a 16" barrel, just get an SBR and can it.

Didn't know that and do see that this barrel is 16".

Seems that half the owners love the cartridge, half the owners were not impressed and moved on. As RATW mentioned, the round is designed to be suppressed. AAC introduced the .300BO in 2009 as a military round for the M4 and used for close quarter combat. The BO is a copy of the 300 Whisper (.30/221) designed by JD Jones in the early 90's. JD designed the "Whisper" family of cartridges to be shot in T/C Contender single-shot pistols and be super quiet. People who hunt with Contenders usually limit their shots to < 100 yds.
300BO load data suggests 200-220 gr bullets fired at roughly 1100 fps to achieve the "Hollywood quiet" sound level. Bullet trajectory is similar to a .45-70 lobbing bullets (see chart below). If you don't know the exact yardage of the intended target, you can easily shoot over or under the animal. With a 100 yd zero, the subsonic bullet travels +4" high at 50 yds, and -12" low at 150 yds. Bullet placement is EVERYTHING when shooting deer, pigs, varmints, etc .... I've heard quite a few real-world stories of people shooting hogs and the animal running off due to bad shot placement and limited penetration or no exit wound. One friend of mine loves the round; however, he only hand loads the 110 and 125 gr. bullets since it's flatter shooting and has less room for operator error.
My advice, buy one and shoot it. See if you like it. It's definitely a fun round to shoot, although not the best design for hunting due to it's limitations. It will be nowhere in the same stratosphere as your 30-06. With the BO, you are more probably than not to be looking for wounded animals and searching blood trails. Definitely a fun round to shoot, but IMO the honeymoon phase wears off soon since it has limited effectiveness as a true hunting round

I bought one to shoot suppressed and it’s quiet with sub’s but not very quiet with regular ammo.
It’s fun as hell to shoot but at $30 per box for subs takes the fun out of it quickly.

Ruger AR 556 .300 Blackout
But to your question, i built a 300 blackout pistol as a hog gun. I guess you can deer hunt with in but the bullet has a ton of drop at 100 and further. Being most in LA shoot over a food plot less than 100 yards.... but if you shoot 200+ i would not use this, i would use something more flat.

the maker t Rex 200 gr bullet does amazing things on game up close. Shoulder shots anchor full size pigs.

Meant to be a CCQ round.

That's what I pulled off the gun store's website.
Thanks for all the info everyone! I don't shoot much other than to be sure it's sighted in and ready for the hunt. I am looking for something fun to shoot that'll drop a hog at around 100 yards or a deer out to 150 yards or a bit further.
I'm sure my best bet would be in a bolt action but I was looking for something that would work and also let me squeeze off more rounds, if I wanted.

Ok, this made me out on the round. Thanks for the info!
Anybody have a recommendation for a heavier caliber than 5.56 in an AR platform?

The Barnes round I mentioned earlier works great on Deer, BUT, there is no exit wound so be careful. My deer only went about 10-15yds but don't use this unless you have dogs I would think.

Ruger came out with the SFAR in .308. Reviews show it to be an accurate shooter and it’s lighter than a lot of AR-10’s, especially at its price point. Food for thought.

POF USA also makes like a 7lb small frame 308 Ar10, but it's about $3K. Better off buying an LMT 308 or something.
HONESTLY, just get some 77g HPs from IMI/Black Hills/AAC and have a fild day with the pigs with 556.
Don't buy a 16 inch 300BLK unless you just like burning money.
If you just want something a little heavier for Hogs, LaRue just came out with a 6mm ARC in their Black and Tan.
$2K rifle and you won't get it till Christmas, but damn is it badass and will hold resale value like a champ.

The 300BO was designed for short barrel applications. The power burn happens within the first 9 inches of the barrel. That being said it should do what you need it to out to 200 yards.
I have a 300BO SBR and have killed plenty of deer and hogs with it with supersonic ammo. I have killed a few hogs with subsonic hunting ammo from Underwood. I wouldn't shoot a deer over 150 yds with it.
.224 Valkyrie is another option. I have one in a Mk12 Mod 0 clone. Shoots 90 gr fusion ammo like a laser out to 500 yards. Its basically a 6.8 SPC necked down to a .224. Uses the same mags as 6.8 and BCG. Ammo is easy to find online and about what you would pay for 300 BO.

This is one I'd take a hard look at if I was shopping for another Ruger. Seems to be a solid rifle and well priced.

6.8 spc is ur answer. It will fit on a ar15 lower. Bullets are one dollar to $1.50 apiece roughly another option you should consider is the palmetto state KS 47 it shoots 76 2 x 39 rounds. Works great on pigs and deer within 100 to 120 yards. Steel ammo is about $.60 apiece.
