I know there are 1911 enthusiasts, as well as history buffs on here who would enjoy

Used the same exact set up while stationed in Germany in the 80's...

Was that person that owned the 1911 a volunteer in French service? Verdun was in 1916 and the US didn't enter the war until 1917.

All the other dates, all being 1918 battles, make sense with him losing the first one in mid-1918.

It doesn't matter, just wondering if the guy was a volunteer. Very cool gun.

That’s a great question, and I’m not sure so I’ll have to ask.

It was one of my great uncles, and he definitely was not French, so I’m not sure what he would have been doing at that battle (I just now briefly googled Verdun).

Not that he was French but there were Americans that volunteered for French service for WWI.

Or he could have been stationed in the Verdun area for a period of time after the battle when the US entered the war.

What is truly remarkable is I carried that same model pistol, holster, magazine, ammunition some 70 years later while serving in the Army in mid-late ‘80’s…

That is freakin' cool. Are you going to shoot it? I carry a glock but I don't think there's a handgun that feels cooler in the hand than a 1911.

I recently inherited a Winchester M1917, made in 1918 but sporterized sometime after the war. Still shoots great, am planning on killing a deer with it soon.

What terrific shape it is in. Join the Facebook page entitled:

M1 Collectors Club M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, 1911, 1903, 1917 Group

It has a wealth of contributors to the interest of all things listed above. They can look at your photos of your item and basically give you all of their knowledge. I’ve used this group to get comments on WWI and WWI era weapons that I own. Give it a try.

That’s mega awesome

I never understood how some soldiers kept their issued arms after the wars.
A guy that used to live next to me has an M14 he said his paw paw (or maybe uncle) used in Vietnam. Is that even possible?

Idk. I held the rifle. Wish I could have shot it. I do not think it had the full auto switch.
