So, I bought an old bell that was made back in the 1800’s. Came from a church up in Makanda Illinois. Can’t decide if it should be sandblasted and painted or heating it up and season it with lard like you would an old pot.

The people that had it before sprayed it with primer and painted it black. The black has worn off and the red primer is showing through. The last picture does not have the cast wheel that the pull rope is attached to. One of the spokes was broken and I had it off re welding it. The bell measures 36” across the lip and weighs 940 lbs.

Damn nice, since it has already been primed, I would blast and paint

I would blast it if it was me. Try to make it as close to original as possible. But I don’t know crap about that stuff

Awesome find. I think I’d blast it and paint again, as well. That’s going to look awesome on the farm. Are you planning to build a stand to put it on?

Going to mount it on a concrete base beside the lake by my house. The all thread rods tying it together will be removed once it is mounted to the concrete.

Yea, I have a 64 cubic foot concrete base that it is going to be installed on.

Blast it aluminum oxide the polish that thing up and have Cerakote clear applied that would look great. You can polish it to look like chrome.

That would look pretty slick but that is not really the look I’m going for. More like a seasoned cast iron pot.

No doubt, I already have a 38” bell mounted in front of our farm shop and the wasps do love to nest in it.

Blast, prime, paint. Make sure to use oil based primer and paint that's intended for use on metal. It may take several coats to achieve the look you desire.

those old bells are great if you want to warn the villagers that there are raiders on the horizon.

If you knew someone at a heat treating company that could put it in their oven and heat it evenly is the only way I would go with heating it. Any other way you may risk the chance of it cracking.

Very cool nonetheless.

What do bells from the 1800s run these days, if I may ask?

Get it up and start ringing it, they will be coming soon enough.

We've got a smaller one that is painted....It was that way when we got it-If I had the choice, I'd do whatever it took to have it unfinished/natural, or as close to original as possible.
