A local store had one a few weeks ago for $369. I decided against it because the salesman said their warranty wasn’t as good as Vortex’s warranty.

That's a crazy deal for that Viper.
Never seen so many deals on LPVOs.
Apparently they are "out of vogue" now after they were all the rage 18 months ago.

Yeah if you spend some time on r/AR15 ACOGs have made a big comeback.
Honestly I do most of my shooting with a carry handle even though I have an Aimpoint PRO.
Only thing I know about LPVOs is the $2000 VCOG and that's because Marine Corps infantrymen use it now.

I don't think they're practical for the average person.

I saw a demo at a Sheriff's office years ago on the ACOG. The demo guy took it off the AR and threw it as far as he could. Picked it up remounted it and it was still zero'd. Made a believer out of me. I bought a 4x32 the next day.

- Left in a rain barrel for a week
- Dropped/thrown a bunch of times
- Ran through dishwasher
- Frozen for weeks
- Shot with 12 gauge to free it from ice
Still going like a champ.

Officer that shot the chick in Nashville had an LPVO on his rifle.

i noticed that. i thought it was odd that one of them was yelling "let the LPVO go" or something to that effect. essentially, they wanted that dude with the LPVO to lead them like it had some kind of advantage over the other weapons they were carrying. there might've been, but my experience level wouldn't know what that was.

I didnt listen to the video with sound.
The motions to me, looked like they wanted the long guns to go first. They would clear a bit and get jumbled, then reassemble and put the long guns first.
Ill have to listen with sound.

Which he didn't use.
That officer probably uses ammo that will reliably fragment well beyond roughly 100 yards as well. The average person doesn't.

Can anyone recommend a quality AR in 556 that is ambi? Looking for something to shoot on the weekends at the property and to have if ever needed.
Considering building one but I'm not sure what the barrier to entry is for that. Can I get the basic tools and parts for cheaper than just buying a whole gun? Saving a few bucks isn't necessarily a concern, but was thinking after I build one I could always build another down the road.

ambi safety? ambi mag release? bolt release? charging handle? all four?

i'd buy outright. you're gonna need at least $100-200 in tools to build one:
armorer's wrench for barrel nut/castle nut
torque wrench for barrel nut
magwell vise block
upper receiver barrel vise rod
brass/nylon hammer
set of punches
those are the bare minimum. not mention an actual work bench and vise if you don't already have one.
what's your budget?

All 4.
$1000-2000

Just buy a Radian ADAC-15 lower. That cover your safety, mag release and bolt release.

limited to OD Green. which may not be that big of a deal to him, but it's almost $500 for stripped lower.
here's an LMT for $350 on gunbroker.

and it's mostly assembled as well. then just buy an upper of his choosing with an ambi charging handle.
