Does STAG make a good AR-15?

All of my uppers and BCGs are Stag. I build lefty ARs. I know it’s not necessary but as a lefty, it’s nice for a change. As far as those parts go, they have been sturdy and reliable. I use faxon barrels and Midwest industries handguards.

Got plenty of guns, but never owned an AR. Not really my thing.

That’s where I was. I didn’t want to spend the money on one and didn’t have a burning desire for one, but I figured the best time is now bc years down the line I’ll probably wish I’d gotten one. So I just ordered this one:

It’s by Great Lakes Firearms. I know nothing about them but I liked the look of the gun. I get tired of all-black guns.

And I have another like this one with a 14.5” barrel in gray.

In honor of the assault weapons ban passing the house I decided to get a 2nd AR to complement the M&P Sport II. Got an Aero Gen 2 stripped lower and the PSA midlength MOE rifle kit. Will stick a carry handle on the Sport II and move the red dot to the PSA. Any advice on first build? What minimum tools will I need?
Turned out nice!

They've never let me down. My two 7.62 uppers run flawlessly and have done so for a lot of rounds. Made great hog guns.

Not really, but their customer service sucks.

Decided to top my new Aero/PSA with a Primary Arms 3x32 prism scope. Red dots look fuzzy with my eyes and I have no need for the high end magnification levels of an LPVO so it should be a good compromise. Should be here by end of week.

Joining the kids needed an upper for this hunting season.

At that price it'll serve their purpose at their size and when they get old enough I'll give them each an AR. One will have to settle for the 7.62x39

I sent Foxtrot Mike the whole gun today. They claimed they have a newer revision of the bolt carrier.
Maybe they let me trade it for an 11.5 side charger upper.

So I took my new AR15 to the range, and I fear that it’s junk. This gun is brand new from Great Lakes Firearms.
Multiple failures to fire and a few failures to eject. Range gunsmith didn’t see anything mechanically wrong with the gun and said the light strikes could be bad ammo (ammo was brand new Armscor). I’m going to try different ammo and hope that helps. Maybe the gun will loosen up and the ejection failures will stop.

Aside from those failures, the gun just feels a little janky. Not nearly as tight and solid as my PSA AR10. Of course, the gun was only about $700 so I certainly didn’t buy top shelf and I can live with the not-tight feel but the failures are disappointing.

What do y’all suggest is better, flip up iron sights or a cheap red dot? I bought a $35 red dot from Amazon but I sort of like the looks of the flip up sights. I have the flip ups on my AR10 and I’m satisfied, and I have no experience with red dots.

This is for my new cheap AR15 that I don’t want to put much money into. Not intended to be a long distance shooter so 100 yards max distance needed and realistically more like 50-75.

BUIS (back up iron sights) cost might surprise you.

Magpul sights will be ~ $150+

That being said, I would rather have BUIS over a cheap red dot that might not work when you need it to.

They are shockingly expensive but I already have a front one so only need a rear.
