Tell me about the 5.45x39, thinking about building another AR. Flat shooter? Accurate? Thinking about going this way because of the 5.56 shortage. Why not have another caliber to practice with?

My severely overpriced ammo came in today. I am pretty much set to start shooting. Now all I need is time. I still want a compact m4 type weapon too.

I have a 5.45 AR (Ballistic Advantage upper on home-build lower) that I've been using once again. I built up a decent supply of surplus 7N6 before the ATF reclassified it as armor piercing and blocked its importation.
I haven't messed with commercial 5.45 offerings for groups, but with a 2 MOA Aimpoint on it I was grouping right at 2 MOA. I've used the commercial 5.45 to shoot just to clean out the corrosive residue from the 7N6.
New barrel, bolt, and 5.45 mags is all you need. I have 5.45 ASC mags which were apparently unreliable with 5.45 initially but the later ones they made are solid. There was a thread on ARFCOM where a few guys were messing around with modifying regular 5.56 mags to work. I believe one guy was able to make some changes to the follower on a Gen 2 PMAG to get it to reliably hold and feed 27 or 28 rounds.
If you are shooting 7N6, you'll also need an XP hammer spring or use a Geissele trigger because the primers on 7N6 can be hard.

Ordered a bolt yesterday. Like a dumbass, having trouble finding a barrel.
Supposedly Optics planet will have one in 7 weeks. We shall see. I'm going to wait on buying ammo and magazines until then.

No. I'm looking at a 750 round case of Wolf 5.45 for $199.99 right now.
The big thing is finding the barrels, bolts, and mags. Spikes Tactical and Smith and Wesson all made 5.45 ARs until the 7N6 reclassification. 5.45's appeal came in the cheapness of the ammo and the ATF's decision changed that, so the market changed and manufacturers shifted away from it.

Barrel and ASC mags inbound
Model 1 sales didn't have the barrel I ordered but they're sending me an M4 profile with a chrome bore for the same price. Should be here tomorrow. ASC had a deal on magazines, two for $23. They limited me to 6. Hopefully I can get it built this weekend and start buying more magazines and ammo.

I am wanting to get some current insight on where best to look for something in the sub $1000 (cheaper the better) in .223 or 5.56
I have a friend who's in the know and he's said you can hit the retail joints and get some idea of shipments and develop a contact. He's also said I could begin purchasing parts (with his guidance) and he will assemble it for me.
This would be my first "sporting" rifle and used for recreational fun. I am not that caught up on trigger dynamics and other things that will jack prices sky high. Decent quality, sure.

Buy the parts and let your friend help you assemble them. I recently built a complete AR by ordering parts and watching YouTube. Buying only parts "In Stock" I was able to do the whole project from planned to shooting in 2 weeks. Some sites I used were
