I thought Montana law was to have this done before leaving the state? I know when we went in 2011 our guide did all that before we left

Sucks because my hunting place is on the state line in Amite CO in MS. When I say on the state line I mean if you cross the road your in LA.

Looks like the Skull Mount Guide may come in handy for a few of my fellow MS deer hunters

I understand live deer, but how in the hell is a live deer going to contract CWD in a processing facility?

People dump their carcass and cwd grows in grass. Deer eat grass and contract cwd

The thing is, wildlife biologists don't know exactly how it's spread. While this new law is definitely a pain in the arse, it sure as hell beats CWD being spread around the Southeast. I've seen firsthand what it's done to the deer heard in Midwest over the past 4 years, in particular Missouri and Illinois, and it's no joke.

For a trophy, easiest will probably be to cut the skull plate out with antlers attached and kill another deer when you get home for the hide. Or find another hide thru friend or taxidermist.

FIFY
Going to be a boom in business for MS,TX and AR taxidermists, but will be a bust for LA taxidermists.

I don't think the hide would be an issue. If no spinal or brain tissue attached

Thanks. Other than hearing my dad bring it up occasionally I really had no idea about it.

"No person shall import, transport or possess any cervid carcass or part of a cervid carcass originating outside of Louisiana, except: for meat that is cut and wrapped; meat that has been boned out; quarters or other portions of meat with no part of the spinal column or head attached, antlers, clean skull plates with antlers, cleaned skulls without tissue attached, capes, tanned hides, finished taxidermy mounts and cleaned cervid teeth. Any and all bones shall be disposed of in a manner where its final destination is at an approved landfill or equivalent."

But most the time if one's going to have the buck mounted, the hide will be attached to a portion of the spine and the skull will still contain the brain. As I read it, if a hunter wants to have a head/shoulder mount made in LA w/ a buck killed elsewhere, he'll now have to either have to have the trophy caped out or remove the spine entirely then clean out the skull. Definitely will be an inconvenience for the trophy deer.

It's definitely gonna be a pain in the arse for people hunting in neighboring states. But I'm good with the decision. I'm hoping it's a step in the right direction for LA in deer management.

Statewide antler restriction would be a better start.

You sure you aren't thinking of EHD?

The biggest threat to deer from CWD is the biologist's reaction to it (liberalizing doe seasons, bringing in sharpshooters, removing antler restrictions etc.) It's been in NW Arkansas for decades and the deer herd up there is light years better (both in numbers and quality) than it was 10-15 years ago.

Caping a deer isnt hard.

Not as easy as dropping hole head off at taxidermists i agree.

Now euro.mounting will be a dick

Just takes some extra time.

Yea the euro mount is gonna force people to use out of state taxidermists or bring all the supplies. Which would be a pain
