Nilgai have been a very popular animal to try new calibers and bullets on. I’ve read multiple articles over the years where writers were invited down for hunts.
Seems a heavy caliber and well constructed bullet are important.

Yup.

Can you kill them with a .243 in the neck, yea but I wouldn’t recommend it.

They do not bleed worth a shite. Also the cows are much easier to kill than a mature bull over 600 lbs so a .270 or .280 with a good bullet is fine for a cow.

Don't be bringing that swamp deer overkilling neck beard.

If you ever need an extra rifle I have a new 300 I need to practice with and am already in TX. I'll keep dwnshft in check from doing anything too trashy.

And Rize just say the word and I am headed SW. I can trade you for some trophy trout fishing in port O'Connor.

This was Rize’s bull and the recovered bullets … pretty sure it was his Omen Nemo .300 WM

What about a well placed bow shot? I very rarely rifle hunt anything anymore but when I do I use a little lever action .44 magnum and it’s dropped everything I’ve ever shot with it…deer, hogs, and black bear.

A propery placed arrow in the heart/lungs will definitely work. Arrow set-up is pretty important since bulls can weigh 600 lbs. The hard part is getting a 20-30 yd shot since Nilgai have great eyesight and sense of smell

“The hard part is getting a 20-30 yd shot“…with my whitetail setup on my Hoyt I can accurately shoot at 100yds when it’s not windy. My longest whitetail kill is from 70 yards…I can reach out there and touch them but 600 lbs is gonna need a lot more arrow …what grain arrows are you using?

that picture is not me, just a random i-net picture of archery nilgai. Most seem to favor using 450-550 gr arrow with a fixed 2-blade broadhead like the 200 grs German Kinetics Silver Flame. These hunts usually cost $2,000 ~ $4,000 on most Texas Ranches. Wounded nilgai due to poor shot placement (rifle or bow) have been known to run for miles and miles, through barded wire fences, as they don't stop. Ideal set-up is over a watering hole and wait.
