Currently shooting a Ruger American 270, and am looking for a bigger caliber. Cant decide between 3 calibers. 30-06, 7mm rem mag, and a 300 win mag. Give me pros and cons of each and thank you for your time. NEVER hillary!

Won't debate calibers with you.......but the 30-06 and .270 Win are very similar.

If you handload there are more 30 caliber bullets available to choose from. Either of the latter will kill a doornail dead.

1st off, dont get rid of a 270 for a 30-06. they're so close and it'd be a total lateral move

go 300 win mag

Honestly there's little difference between the .30-06 and .270 if you're shooting deer. The 06 separates itself as an elk rifle. Really the same could be said for the 7mag and .300wm also. Neither will do much more than a .270 when shooting deer at normal range.

If you just want more horsepower than .300wm is the obvious choice. It's bigger and badder than the 7mag in every way. 7mag is a good performer but it doesn't do anything that the .300win can't do better. The .300 can sling bigger bullets farther.

I shoot the 270 also and have never needed more gun for regular deer hunting. If wanted more power I would step all the way up to a .300 or .338 Mag.

.338 win mag or better

Has the correct answer.

Honestly if brown bear (or anything that lives in the same place as brown bear) was an option, I'd get a .375 H&H. There's some light loads out there that would be great mid to long range elk loads and heavy loads that are great brown bear medicine. It's available in tons of popular bolt action rifles. Ammo is widely available.

.375 H&H is the standard by which all other "universal" calibers are judged. .338 win mag would be sufficient for your needs, but .375 would be better.

That is what most of the guides I came across in Alaska last year carried

.375 is a good option for stuff that can eat you in North America. It has the horsepower and the right kind of bullets available to crush a brown bear.

It also has some lighter loads that would be great for elk. It's probably the best "all purpose" caliber in the world. It's far eclipsed by the .30-06 in the southern United States but globally it's the gold standard.

I found this article In Real Guns comparing the 375 H&H vs the 375 Ruger.

They compare the round and the rifles. Very interesting read.

Check out the 9.3X62. One of my all time top 5 cartridges that have killed game with. Has plenty of power to kill anything in North America and most everything in Africa.
