New Gun Owner Ammo Question
Posted on 1/19/21 at 3:48 pm

So I decided to purchase my first ever handgun. Not a hunter and never previously owned a gun so bear with me on what may be a long question.
The local gun store only sells me 100 rounds of ammunition, it's a little 9mm Sig Sauer. It looks like I'll need more than that just to learn how to use the thing. Searching around here it looks many of you like this ammoseek.com site. It looks like I'll be paying what amounts to $37-$39 per 50 rounds of ammunition if I purchase this way. The only other alternative is apparently waiting in line at retail stores and checking around to buy it at normal retail. I don't mind paying the extra money because I really don't have time to drive around or search around.
On ammoseek.com these various online stores are typically selling like 500-1000 rounds of ammunition from many different brands(or no brands), sometimes remanufactured or new. Sometimes in what looks like a giant zip lock bag of bullets. Is there anything I should look out for in purchasing this way?
Any other comments or observations that would help someone new at this are appreciated.

What model Sig? I'm currently waiting for a P365 to come in.
Yes, what you are saying is just the age we are in. Ammo can be had easily if you are willing to pay for it. I would keep checking your local sporting good stores as I have been lucky to stumble upon some from time to time over that last few months. Good luck.

I bought a used P290. I thought about ordering a P365 but they had this little pistol and it seemed fine to me. Just wanted to get started with owning a self-defense pistol. I almost never make it by a sporting good store and don't browse shop too often. Time is a premium now days with kids, work and activities. I'd put off owning a firearm for far too long so I'm just trying to get that established.

Ah yeah. Sometimes I forget we're all over the place on TD. I live in Baton Rouge / Prairieville. And a box is technically 50 right?

If you are just wanting range ammo to practice with, look for FMJ bullets, brass cases. Remanufactured/reloaded ammo is great to practice with. A family member of mine rolled his own for years. Gave me about 1,000 rounds of 9mm several years ago. He always swept up his brass and took it home with him. He'd even make his own lead bullets for his revolvers, but bought FMJ for his semi-autos.
Might be a little too much info for now, but pay attention to bullet weight while you are learning. Some people try and duplicate what their defense ammo is. I keep either Speer Gold Dot or Hornady Critical Defense in mine. I prefer a heavy for the caliber bullet to practice with. I had a .40 that loved the 180gr bullets, but the lighter stuff wasn't as tight when I shot it. Same thing with the 9mm I have now. I shoot better with 147 and 124 gr bullets than the 115gr and lighter bullets.

I’d stay away from reloaded ammo unless you know who is reloading.

Self defense ammo usually comes in 20 round boxes.

Is reloaded and remanufactured the same thing? That’s one thing I noticed on the ammoseek site.

If I go into a store to get something I need and this said store also sells ammo, I always swing through the sporting goods to see if they have any ammo. Sometimes you can get lucky.

Yes. I handload and I wouldn't buy it from someone I didn't know. Buy factory ammo.

Call Spillway Sportsman in Addis, LA. Out of every shop i frequent they always have the largest selection of ammo and one of the few places that only allow people to buy one box per customer per caliber.
All the other places i go you better get there an hour early before they open the day after they get shipments in or else you aren’t getting ammo.
Crazy times. Wish i had the capital to start an ammo
Manufacturing company. I could pay all my employees OT to work 7/12’s and still make billions the way things are going.
Everyone wants ammo right now.

The P365 is far and away the best carry gun I've ever seen. It's also a blast to shoot.
Anyone that can get one under $600 should pull the trigger on it. The one with the safety may be harder to find right now, if you can find one at all.
As for ammo, just buy whatever you can and as much as you can.
You'll need about 100 rounds to get a good feel for your new gun and then a small box of hollow points/defense loads to keep in it while you carry.
Best thing to do is just make sure your grip is good and you'll be more accurate. There's lots of videos out there on it.

Picked one up today at Spotted Dog. Been looking for one since October and finally landed on it for sub $600.
I will say I have turned down the XL, the SAS and the manual safety. All I wanted was the standard P365 in either black or FDE (nra edition), and man they are hard to find.

Call around to pawn stores and just ask what the have in stock. You'll pay the normal premium prices, but it sure is easy.
I've done the whole waiting in line at Academy 4 times now and struck out each time. The pawn shop had 9mm and .380 the one time I called them. Picked it up and done in 20 minutes round trip

So remanufactured and reloaded are two different things. Generally reman ammo comes from a reputable company that uses once fired brass to make “new” ammo. It’s a good way to cut cost when buying in bulk. Reloaded ammo is generally from anybody who reloads ammo. I would never ever buy any reloaded ammo ever. Too many things can go wrong in the process. I would also never buy anything out of a ziplock bag.
That being said, I reload myself and keep a lot of my ammo in a ziplock. I would just never sell it due to the liability. I’ve also bought a lot of reman ammo from precision delta and they have always been good. But that’s a reputable company.
Best advice for you as a novice is to buy factory. It may be more expensive but it’s a whole lot safer.

There are some laser trainers that work with your smart phone. They can be had for about $120 or so.
Come with a bullet with a laser and a rubber back end where the hammer/pin would land so as to not damage your gun dry firing it.
Check YouTube.
