The dog has been great since we got him. Retrieves great but has started losing his mind. Scratching at the floor for no reason, Chewing on him self, but no fleas. He has become a mental case. Anyone else have this issue? He’s been great so far, now he’s losing his shite

If it is feet it could be food allergies.

My 7 y/o female boykin does this. Puts her whole hind foot in her mouth and gnaws on it. It is definitely allergies, but it appears to be seasonal and not food related.

My BIL had a psychotic Boykin with a terrible disposition. Good retriever but would shite on top of the blind and bite people. I hated that damn dog

If allergies then odds favor environmental triggers. Much more common

several dogs in my neighborhood had severe allergic reactions after a lawn care guy grotesquely mis -mixed some ant killer....

Sometimes you can’t stimulate a dog by physical exercise alone. It’s much quicker to wear a dog out by exercising its mind, just as if you went to work and had a stressful day you’ll come home exhausted.

Make the dog walk across an elevated ladder, carefully obviously. It will stress the shite out of them very quickly but it’s good training bc it makes them think.

My boykin actually was acting similarly (scratching, freaking out, rubbing etc. Come to find out he had an ear infection. But a ear infection to a boykin is much different than other dogs (according to my Vet).
He gave me an antibiotic, and a ear wash. No problems since.

Constant ear infections and chewing on the feet are common allergies for pure breeds.

I have a purebred golden and my dad (a veterinarian) gave him an injection (forget the name of the medicine but can find it) that is supposed to treat his allergies for only a month. He hasn’t chewed on his feet in about 3 months so we’ve been pretty satisfied with the trial run.

That’s probably a steroid injection. It’ll work but will have some pretty serious side effects if given too much.

Same with Apoquel oral medication.
