Mine was kind of doing the same thing. We changed his food and it cut the biting himself way back. Dr. said it was allergies he developed over time.

My Australian Shepherd is allergic to crabgrass. I had a bunch in a reclaimed area of the yard last year. He chewed the hair off his feet. We had to give him Benadryl every day.
