About to have a 30x40 ft shop put up. I have an electrician that will wire everything but I need to buy the lighting fixtures.
Any recommendations on what to use. I would think LED for sure. Beyond that I don’t know. Seems to be quite a few options online.
TIA

I just installed eight of the new LED units to replace some old florescent fixtures. Bright and clean light.
I got the cheapies off Amazon and they work every bit as well as the expensive ones in my office. YMMV.

I have the 4 ft. two and four tube fluorescent lights in my home shop and that is adequate.
I think it will depend on how high your ceilings are. My house is an older home in N.O. with a ceiling that is only 7 ft. 4 inches high on the ground floor which has the man cave and woodworking shop. Each area is in the 800 sq. ft. or so of space and I have 9 fixtures in my shop alone. Many of them over the main tools I use like the table saw, radial arm saw, jointer planer, shaper table, drill press and bandsaw.

Wow, I'm jealous. 1200 sq. ft. of floor space with a 14 ft. high ceiling is huge compared to my workspace. I would imagine you're going to hang some lights to be closer to your work. Plus, it would be much easier to change bulbs when they go out not being so high up.
I have LED lights in my man cave to light my 2 dart boards and they are great since the produce no heat. I use to have halogen lights on my track lighting for the boards and you could almost get a damn suntan walking in front of them to retrieve the darts.

What kind of work will you be doing? If you're going to be painting and need to see your work in natural lighting there is a "natural light" fluorescent bulb. I don't recall the exact name or type. And they might be LEDs now that do the same thing.

Actually I won’t be doing much work in it. It’s mostly going to be to house my boat, lawn equipment, and fishing gear. I will probably do my fishing gear prep in there though. I wanted the high ceiling to accommodate a boat with a T-top.
I have an attached shop on my house which is currently full of stuff. I will turn that into a mancave.

I have 3 4' hooded LED 4000K shop lights from lowes. Nothing special at $40 per light. all linkable with an extension cord and plugs into an outlet. Plenty enough for my 20x35 with a 14' eve height. With the roll up door open and a window, I hardly need them on during the day anyway. For your size i'd say 2 rows of 3 or 4 of an equivalent light would be plenty

LED is the way to go. If you have or have access to existing florescent fixtures there are now lamps to replace with LED and throw the ballast away, they have 4ft and 8ft bulbs out there. For a shop you will look at either 4,000 or 5,000 color and I like the 5K better.
If you are buying new fixtures buy something with a hood on it to keep the light pointed down.

Sam's Club and Costco have some decent prices on 4' led shop lights

I have 8 of these in my 30x40 and they are great! Very bright. I mounted them with the brackets not the hanging mounts.

I am about to build the same size shop. Are you using a metal building kit or having someone build it?

Drop the temperature to 4000K. Would be much easier on the eyes.

you can never have enough lights.
even hanging a few in the middle, if you are going to have a work bench on the sides hang smaller 4ft lights right off the wall about 1ft or so. With lights hanging in the middle and with you standing by the work bench you cast a shadow and it stays dark.

Can't be stated enough.
The only thing I'd add to the LED recommendations is don't put them all on 1 switch bc you may only need 1/2 or 1/3 of the shop lit when working.

Would be no biggie if on one switch. It's not like you burning a bunch of power with LED's.

Yeah I know it's cheap to run LEDs, IF I had this shop I'd put the lights on probably 3 switches

For my shop, I installed outlets in the ceiling and mounted 4ft LED shop lights.
The outlets are switched for the lights and I can add / replace as needed. You can also daisy chain the shop lights directly for more options.
I have 8 4ft fixtures currently in a 32*36*12 and need to add several more overhead and some task lighting at the work benches.
You can find light output calculators online to help with spacing and number of lights needed.
